I have noticed that within the past several years, the number of people "Crying Wolf" or in my terms "Calling Doomsday" have skyrocketed. There are end of the world scenarios involving sudden global climate shifts, biblical apocalypses, global meltdowns, alien invasions, demonic invasions, initiations of martial, cosmic collisions, and various other horrible scenarios.

As my parents like to say, people have been predicting the end of the world since the world began. People have even ended their lives in advance of such predicted events because they are so certain that they are right. And yet, the world goes on.

Tons of people thought the world was going to end towards the end of 2012. Look at how that worked out.

It seems that too many people get worked up over nothing, and the things that hold even some merit, are often things they cant do a damn thing about.

Thoughts?

So long and thanks for all the fish

Lemmings became the subject of a popular misconception that they commit mass suicide when they migrate. It is not a mass suicide, but the result of their migratory behavior. Driven by strong biological urges, some species of lemmings may migrate in large groups when population density becomes too great. Lemmings can swim and may choose to cross a body of water in search of a new habitat. In such cases, many may drown if the body of water is so wide as to stretch their physical capability to the limit. This fact, combined with the unexplained fluctuations in the population of Norwegian lemmings, gave rise to the misconception.

Ever see that old Apple superbowl commercial with the businessmen walking to a cliff and jumping off? It was symbolic of using IBM computers when Apple was trying to break into the business machine industry and it pissed many business companies off and contributed to Apple's downward spiral. But, I digress.

Have you ever read about what happened in 1999? There were doomsday predictions then too. The people went NUTS! Its quite comical thinking of those medeival people acting just like we did with the advent of y2k.

“Now I do not know whether I was then a man dreaming I was a butterfly, or whether I am now a butterfly, dreaming I am a man.” -Zhuangzi

“Though, as the crusade presses on, I find myself altogether incapable of staying here in saftey while others shed their blood for such a noble and just cause. For surely must the Almighty be with us even in the sundering of our nation. Our fight is for freedom, for liberty, and for all the principles upon which that aforementioned nation was built.” - Patrick “Madman of Galway” O'Dell

I was telling my clinically paranoid brother just yesterday that, statistically speaking, predictions of the world's end have so far been 100% inaccurate. He didn't find it as funny as I did.

Perhaps the world isn't ever going to end ?

I think that people believe in doomsday prophecies because they think they need a reason to live the way they want to. "The end is coming so I can finally be who I really want to be" or "The end is near so I can do all the things I shouldn't do". Often these are just excuses people use so they don't have to face their other problems.

As for the people that sincerely believe these prophecies of doom, they will always exist. You can't kill an idea no matter how hard you try. The prophecies make for good stories though. We can all tell our grandchildren about the time we survived the end of the world, six times.

May the Force be with you,
Rai

When people experience things that contradict rational expectations, they tend to go searching for answers and this is what they come up with. Maybe the increase lately is a result of rising inequality. More and more people are experiencing a world that is completely turned on it's head and nothing makes sense. Doctors destroy health, lawyers destroy justice, universities destroy knowledge, governments destroy freedom, the press destroys information, religion destroys morals, and our banks destroy the economy.

Few are those who see with their own eyes and feel with their own hearts.
