Every child deserves to be protected from child abuse regardless of whether their parents are motivated by religion.

Wisconsin and more than a dozen other states have protections in place to keep parents who choose prayer over medical attention from being charged with child abuse.

A: many studies throughout the ages have repeatedly proven prayer is ineffective. It can have a placebo and reverse-placebo effect. (a believer who knows they are not being prayed for will get sicker)

B: "let god sort em out"? That's a valid legal defence?

besides, this comes to mind:

A city is experiencing a terrible flood. A man is sitting on his front porch watching the water rise and a jeep drives up. “Get in! Everything’s going to be underwater!” “No thanks. God will save me. An hour passes and the water Has risen in the house. A boat comes by. “Get in! You’re going to drown!” “No thanks. God will save me.” The water rises over the house. The man is now on the roof. A helicopter flies overhead. “We’ll lower a line. Grab it or you’ll die!” “No thanks. God will save me.” The man drowns. When he gets to Heaven and meets God he says, “God! Why didn’t you save me?!”

“I sent a jeep, a boat, and a helicopter. What more did you want?”

Convictions are more dangerous foes of truth than lies.

Ditto, about the flood story.

You know, if you truly loved your kids wouldn't you want to do anything to save them no matter the consequences? Religious or not. And how is feeding your child a vitamin drink an affront to god??? They eat, don't they?

What frightens me about that story, and others Ive read like it is the absolute and unquestioning faith that those people have in conjunction with an obvious lack of education. I followed that story when it broke and it seemed obvious that they did love their child, but STILL to place the life of your child in faith? Especially after losing a child previously under similar circumstances? I cant really comprehend it.

Walking, stumbling on these shadowfeet

Part of the seduction of most religions is the idea that if you just say the right things and believe really hard, your salvation will be at hand.

Yeah, I just don't quite understand the thought process of people who place their wellbeing or the wellbeing of others entirely within the realm of faith, when more often than not faith does little in the term of practical care for those with severe stages or forms of illness.

I mean, sure faith has its place, but that place is not within the replacement of proper medical care by trained medical professionals.

So long and thanks for all the fish

I am a Believer, but that doesn't means I don't take steps of preventive care or go to the Dr. when I am ill. God has given the Dr. wisdom to heal what ails me. It's like that story of the flood. More accurately the story of the woman with the issue of blood. Before she went to Jesus, she spent all her money on doctors. When it was found that she could not be helped, THEN she pressed her way through the crowd to get to Jesus. A lot of people focus on the "she pressed her way through the crowd" and fail to see what she did before.

A lot of this ignorance comes from not reading the bible. If you read the book of Leviticus, the law is very clear. If Leviticus would have been written in our time, it would have suggested we seek the wisdom of a trained doctor.

One of my favorite quotes from Lev. 13:41 "And if he loses hair on his forehead, he simply has a bald forehead; he is still clean."

I would caution about nitpicking certain parts of the bible to make a point... especially if it's from Leviticus...
