The fact that you can live wherever you want without having to worry about being attacked or denied rights for your sexuality is a privilege. "Any place a gay person would reasonably want to live?" Really? Gay people would reasonably want to be able to live anywhere without fearing discrimination. No, gay people probably wouldn't go to a Southern Baptist church, but they would like to be able to live in North Carolina without facing discrimination.

I concede that I am speaking from my experience. I do, however, know tons of gays here in Alabama and in neighboring Mississippi who don't face discrimination. North Carolina must be backasswards...

Is it possible for them to be fired from their jobs if their manager or boss doesn't like them being gay? Can they get married? Discrimination is often violence, but not always.

To be clear, I'm not trying to pin any blame on you for being privileged. As I said before, privilege comes whether we believe it should or not. Also, I'm straight and I have all of the social privileges that come from being straight, and although I don't have the legal privileges yet, I will eventually. I am listing these privileges and realizing that I have these privileges as well.

I think, in nearly everywhere in the US, firing somebody for being gay would result in a huge lawsuit.

I know you're not blaming me, it's cool. I recognize some privileges, but I am also quick to point out the pitfalls and privileges of all designations.

It might result in a lawsuit, but that doesn't mean the employer wouldn't win. In North Carolina you can absolutely be fired for being gay and there isn't much you can do about it.

Well, I guess if it's a right-to-fire state, you can fire somebody for anything. In any case, sorry if I seemed hostile, belated welcome to manhood! :)
