We should not have the right to tell them that they don't know best... even when they don't.

Pain management is a difficult topic, but I cannot help but think that suicide for the terminally ill should only ever be an option for anyone in those final stages of the terminal illness - just for the reason that we are learning things all the time, and it would be a shame to opt out of life in the moment before something was found which could have resolved the conditions forcing that decision to be taken. Regardless of the patients age.

Anyone alive is facing "imminent death" ; we just don't know the term and probably would best not use our Reason to decide on one. If, on the other hand, we're just using our idea of science to prolong a life that is marked by suffering - as much by the prolongation as by the disease killing it - and death is not only imminent but probably would have resulted already except by our meddling, then it is not even "suicide" nor "euthanasia" but simply permitting death to happen.
It seems that these are silly things to squabble over ... :S

Isn't everything we "squabble", silly?
Yet, we do it anyway....
We squabble over that which we find important enough to squabble over...

I find this news rather comforting... I am glad for the option for the patient, for the family....
I have had my father pass suddenly, and watched the life ebb out of my father-in-law...
The quick one, "BANG", lights out... Last memories were good ones...
The slower one, the last memories are of bed shitting, and hallucinations.... Moans of pain, and uncertainty of morphine doses...
I can't imagine that with a child...
