High-protein diet 'as bad for health as smoking'
In which case it sounds a bit like being born increases the chance of death!
Life guarantees death.
And considering some rather important body parts like our brains have a shelf life no matter how we eat/live, I don't think living relatively long is such a great thing.

If so that could be awesome! Do something bad (-) times do something else bad (-) equals something (+) good!

But it’s probably more like addition…

And another but… we have figured out all kinds of ways to shorten our lifespan. This is bad and will kill you faster; this is badder and will kill you more fasterer. Somethings are badest and will kill you the fasterest!!!
So, if we do everything right, does that mean we will live forever?

Or is it more to do with the quality of life that we have while here?
In that case, who can seriously quantify the awesomeness levels a cheeseburger raises the quality of my life? :woohoo:

Whats the likelihood of getting to inhale some second hand steak if I hang around high protien dieters?
Only slightly chewed of course. Tenderised really.
Hmmm Steak.

That said, I don't like having people cite research in media without really talking about it properly (if they even reference it properly at all) so I went to have a look at the actual research paper. All protein isn't the actual problem but non-plant based protein and only those in middle age and under 65. Over 65 higher protein is better for mortality. There's no research for those under 50.
If any one is interested the paper can be found here: http://www.cell.com/cell-metabolism/abstract/S1550-4131%2814%2900062-X#Summary
The paper is interesting but limited, and the newspaper titles are shouting about something which obviously is more to shock and scare. Not sure what 'smoking' has to do with the paper either.
It won't let me have a blank signature ...

The original article said that it was worse for middle aged and possibly better for seniors etc.
