Could this be due to increased metabolic activity? In which case it sounds a bit like being born increases the chance of death! If we could all hibernate our bodies while having our minds plugged into a computer - it would be interesting to see how long it would last at such a reduced rate of metabolic activity.

I saw this in the paper today here too. I have no real buy in one way or the other (my diet is quite boring and balanced) but in the last few months Ive seen countless articles citing studies that show high protien diets to be medical miracles.

Who do you believe? Either way, nutritional advice from a newspaper is going to be incomplete no matter what.

And has anyone done proper controlled studies taking into account other lifestyle factors and genetics etc?

High protein diets will not cause cancer ,however, diets that exceed more than 1.5 g per pound of body weight do have the problem that when the human body breaks down proteins into amino acids for digestion it produces ammonia as a by product. Ammonia is , which is highly toxic is quickly turn into Urea by the kidneys but not before it circulates through the blood stream a few times causing a rukus. This is normally not a problem unless you're eating it in very large amounts which is why body builders often die at a younger age.

That depends on the amount of protein you require to maintain muscle mass. If you take in more protein than you require to maintain or even build mass, then it can be harmful, given the right conditions. If the excess protein you take in is from an isolate source (i.e. a protein shake), your body is just going to get rid of the excess. Intaking more protein from meat can cause digestive issues and be toxic because of having to digest more than just the protein and the excess can get stuck in the digestive system. This is the reason why eating more vegetables than meat is better for you because it at least helps the digestion along more smoothly. It also depends on the frequency and size of your meat portions. A typically good portioned size for any meat in your meals will be the size of your palm, or even a deck of cards. Any more than that and you'd be wasting your time.

Plant matter tends to be far more difficult to digest than meat. Most excess amino acids can be converted to pyruvate (a type of sugar) and used as energy. Nothing normally gets stuck in your digestive system that is a myth perpetrated by people that want to sell you expensive wasteful cleaning enamines.

I'd put a healthy protein intake at 20% to 35% of what you eat.

You're right. I was writing from memory what I remember reading from over the years. I wasn't, however, saying that plant matter was easier to digest, but that it makes things go along easier.
