American Myths was created by Alethea Thompson
Reading TheKD’s journal I got inspired to post this question-
What would an American Myth look like?
One could point to modern myths such as Star Wars and Avatar the Last Airbender, but I guess this question is broader- what would it take to truly make an American Myth become a national one? And would it actually be beneficial to the US for if it had one?
For my own part, I’m not sold in either direction. I see multiple strengths and weaknesses in the argument for and against a centralized mythology.
of course I also believe it would take considerable effort to get a national level mythology in the US, so it may be a moot point. But I’d love to hear others thoughts

A lot of those are fading and not as relevant as they felt when they were first inspired or even when we were younger. Harriet Tubman & Lincoln have about the same staying power as names like Joan of Arc & Napoleon, but the others not so much. Washington is a close approximation…but it’s like talking about almost any other president at this point- except he was the first.
It’s not that myths don’t exist, it’s that we’re moving into a time where myths need to evolve with us. So I’m asking what a new mythology for America now would need to look like.
. How would it need to impact our culture to be a myth that could grow our culture into a better future.
