Dietary choices of Jedi was created by danielbendu
Hello all!
In short, I'm wondering what peoples dietary preferences are as it pertains to Jediism (specifically if you do or do not consume animal products, such as meat).
From my personal reading up on Jediism these past weeks and looking around the TOTJO forums, I can't find much info on this. To me Jediism is very similar to what we might call "eastern spiritual movements" such as Buddhism and similar "religions", many of which have a variety of views (or even restrictions) on certain foods (Jainism for example, has a broadly vegeterian culture and encourages veganism). Since Jediism (to me) is somewhat similar in both spiritual practice, ethical consideration and philosophy, I was curious as to how individual Jedi view this matter, as I understand there is no official "position" on this as with many other things. I understand that Jedi have a committment towards seeking non-violent solutions to problems as well as a belief that life has a certain inherent value, again similarly to other spiritual movements that use these two facts together as an argument for non-animal based diets.
For context, I have been a vegeterian for several years, but the topic of ethics is very interesting (I have previously studied the work of Peter Singer at Uni in philosophy who is a notable "champion" of animal rights) and one I could not really find a solid answer for as it pertains to Jediism, compared to the relative ease of information from other movements about dietary choices.
I was thinking of doing a poll but this is a topic I understand some people can feel is very personal and/or emotional, so I will leave it as an open question/discussion for those who are willing to simply teach me how they personally view the matter and why.
This is my first non introduction post so let me know if I did not put this in a proper channel or such!
May the force be with you!

I eat and I eat good. I cook well enough to keep me at my choice of physical peak. I like barbecue and homemade dishes. I like collecting recipes as well. Truth be told, the kitchen at the farm welcomes anyone willing to cook and wash. I cannot say there is a Jedi style diet. What you choose is it. And that's ok too.

During the Catholic Lenten Season, I become a vegetarian to acknowledge, contemplate, and reflect humans' relationship with animals. Delving into more personal views, I feel society at large is insulated by the thought of violence contributing to their dinner which is understandable because we are so far removed from our food supply chain. Becoming a vegetarian for a period of time helps me gain a greater appreciation of what is required to have meat on the table. I feel it is important to note that my appreciation goes beyond the physical and mental tolls on the animals, but also of the humans who have to participate in their slaughter. I will not pass judgment on people because of their diet, typically.

I personally don't see anything unethical about eating non-sentient and non-intelligent animals. I'm also pretty broad in what that includes.
Animals I don't eat for ethical reasons: Octopus, Cows (with rare exceptions).
Animals I don't eat for other reasons: Fish, Turkey, Duck.
Animals I do eat: Chickens, Scallops, shrimp, Pork (limited), Lamb (rare), Rabbit (rare).
I use milk alternatives, but do use normal butter/sour cream. Chicken is my main protein and makes up over 90% of my animal protein. When it comes to pork, it's probably only 2% of my animal protein; it's more of a "I direly need a BLT" situation.
I have no intent to go vegetarian, but I respect those who can. It's not for me. I've tried, I just can't do it.

My habits are less dietary choices and more how it's done. I practice mindful eating, which also extends to prep and cooking when it's my turn to cook. Staying mindful reminds me to be grateful for the plants and animals that make up my diet as well as the people who make it possible for me to enjoy them. As far as diet itself, I've radically reduced -- though not eliminated completely -- the amount of animal fat i consume, just because i feel better when I do. And as Knight ChaotishRabe said, I don't judge anyone for their choices in this regard.

Thank you all for your interesting responses, it was thought provoking to read several different views on the subject, especially as it relates to the Lent tradition described by ChaotishRabe.
Thanks for giving your replies in a detailed and well thought out manner, it made it easy to read and understand

I came onto the Jedi Path already having made a progression to veganism. It is something I have continued. In context with the Code, Maxims, and Teachings, I see it as a loving and healing gesture to our animal companions to reduce suffering, pain, death, torment, and slavery. I think they should be set free (and more land rewilded--yes that runs into human population problems, i think we are over populated). I have already experienced them as being conscious beings capable of communication, family, and community bonds. I am capable of getting my nutritional needs, energy, and sensory satisfaction fully from plant-based sources. To me, that creates inner peace, harmony, etc that I aspire to on the right side of the Code. I also resonate with new earth concepts, including animals and humans present giving up carnivorous/competitive tendencies ("lion lies down with the lamb"). For that and other reasons, I see plant-based/vegan as the right thing for me.

I currently eat a flexitarian/omnivorous diet while at home and with my family. I cut out non-kosher products (pork, shellfish, etc.) Once I'm in school, I am going to be going fully kosher style, because of religious purposes, and I am also going pescatarian, because it is the closest place I will be able to get to being vegan at this point in my life. I'd love to go vegan, but I have many safe foods that aren't vegan, and I'm not cutting them all out at once.
