Does Joseph Campbell's "The Hero's Journey" and his philosophy go directly against the idea that no one is special and that the sooner we understand that the better or is that the same thing?

I ask because I have relistened to that section of the IP and spend too much time on Reddit, and I'm conflicted now. I'd like to think I understood and understand Mr. Campbell, but, I'm not sure now.

Also I'm not sure if this belongs in the IP or in Open Discussion, as I'd like to have an open discussion about the opposite view if possible.

I'm not 100% sure what you mean.

But if I base it on the subject line, I think you're asking whether or not being the hero in your own journey makes you stand out in the crowd?

If so, I think I can explain it with an analogy I hope you might understand: Anime.

Every anime you watch, the main character is typically the 4th most interesting person in the whole show. Everyone in the show has their own story to tell, but none are particularly more special than another character. Nor are they more special than even the main character- the main character is just the one that the most things happen around. But the thing is, if you were to follow the anime from the prospective of one of the other 3 interesting characters- you might suddenly find that the main character in the Anime IS one of the more interesting characters.

Anime play out just like we play our own life. We are interested more in the stories of the people around us, and as such our story isn't told as well because we follow ourselves, so we don't feel it needs to be expressed. In this, everyone is UNIQUE, but no one is particularly special in their own right. It is more important that we learn to accept our personal roles in the lives we want to lead (our adventure) than to focus on what makes us unique.

So, the hero's journey can be told from the tale of the General, the soldier, the villain, the woman looking for a love of her life, or any other individual deciding to live a life rather than just get by. So we aren't aspiring to be special, we are aspiring to be part of life, which is an adventure.

^ Hope that made sense.

Each and every snowflake is unique and different from every other snowflake around it, however, when the snow falls they all look very much alike and form snow as a whole.

We're all different, each with our own story, but we're also all still the same and all come together to form the human race.
