Our Regional Sustainability Manageress showed us this during a meeting recently! Very powerful stuff, the whole room was silent afterwards.

Though the farmers amongst us (just me then) weren't necessarily best pleased with the portrayal of the agricultural industry ;)

That wasn't an alien invasion, Marta ... That was just pointing out that we've already put out a very queer sort of 'Welcome' mat for any eventual visitors. For that matter, it shows that from the beginning, Man has not let the environment be 'welcoming' to other non-human animals. Man entered very early into and "I - It" negotiation with the world ...

... when the world "its" us back, we'll be pretty screwed. :pinch:

While people might not be able to agree if emotional intelligence exists as a real thing, I think it would be worthwhile to harness imagination to drive visualization around understanding empathy, perhaps that is what EQ should really stand for empathy quotient. Then the concept of emotional intelligence could have some baseline measurement maybe!? If people could learn early to have and respect the power of empathy, imagine!!!

Ooops looks like it already does; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Empathy_Quotient

this is nihilistic and genocidal and full of self loathing and condemnation

this is a vision where man must despise himself for failing to live up to the standards that only man even acknowledges exist to begin with

not to say that there was not truth in the vision that movie presented, but thats not the only possible vision

those snakes used to eat us when we were tree dwelling primates, and so too do bears even still
and elephants trample us underfoot

the fundamental nature of the universe is chaos - the basic reality of life in a chaotic universe is predation - everything must FEED, and it feeds on other life

we are prey as much as predator

or, we were

it could be said that "civilization" is mans attempt to create stability in a fundamentally hostile world

you'll get no argument from me that we can be selfish and arrogant and greedy and short sighted, and that we continue to make terrible mistakes with disastrous consequences

but so too do we see that these mistakes happen, and so too do we say "let us make no more, let us acknowledge our errors and adjust"

the desire to grow and better ourselves does not demand that we despise ourselves first

recognizing the ugliness does demand denying the beauty

the vision promoted in that film is literally that we deserve to be exterminated - that it is fair and understandable and deserved

is that really the vision you want for your own eyes?

is that the vision you want the world to believe in?

People are complicated.

this post exactly proves my earlier point

we have evolved from monkeys in trees to space stations and the internet

the only reason that you can feel that we are in any way a monster

is because we pulled out of our own Being the ideas of fairness and goodness as standards to which we ought to hold ourselves

if we are monsters it is only because we see that we could be great, and that we havent made it yet

thats what progress is - moving from the lesser to the better

dont blame us for the progress we havent made, join us in making the progress we can

People are complicated.

Well, this video is a poor example of what man has done since hes been here.

This reminds me of religions, other groups, and modes of thought that deal in guilt, and self loathing to make a point.

I do so wonder where the scope is. That is, all the lives saved through medical advances, fending off those initial animals when defending our family, and one of our core foundations for food, clothing, shelter, etc.

I suppose if pessimism is your cup of tea, this is a fine video, but it misses a lot, and is needlessly extreme, one sided, and im not even sure what message is being sent with it.

As for the "Welcome" we have for visitors, i imagine that growing pains with there own world was not avoided perfectly either. Either that, or the reason they are visiting is that they destroyed that world and will use ours, in which case, start the video at the beginning.

For all our faults with this planet, we are working to fix them, and like a person who gains a ton of weight over the years, it takes just as long to lose it.

Its strange, the Dark path rarely is so doom and gloom as Jedi. This video, always a horrible disturbance coming, or Streen saying that there is a "Storm coming." I do so wonder what has made for such a bleak view among you all.

I think the point of the video is to see it from something other then the human point of view.... which goes back to my earlier post about empathy quotient.

In Buddhism there is the 'two truths', and in short they are relative and absolute, and this video I think is an exercise in a relative truth which perhaps most people do not exercise enough.

THEN WHY DID YOU SNOWY?? lol WHY?!?

you walked into it so perfectly it looks like we planned it

i mean really, you sat there looking at the tracks waiting for the train to get here "oh no cant cross yet , the trains not here "

then you threw yourself under it with "im not here to get run over by trains" on your lips lol

now you give me attitude while parroting some nonsense about empathy

who exactly needs to have more empathy snowy? everyone else? lol

very other day i see you putting someone in check for something they say that you cant empathize with and now you BLAH BLAH BLAH about empathy

the video itself was not a message of empathy - do you know what the opposite of empathy is snowy?

its condemnation!
its saying "youre a monster! hes a monster and shes a monster and you know what? HUMAN BEINGS ARE JUST MONSTERS!"
YOURE ALL MONSTERS!"

THATS NOT EMPATHY!! lolol

bet this bugs the helloutta ya doesnt it - but if you want empathy you need to show some more of it

I don't feel any guilt for the actions of those who came before me. That's not my responsibility or yours, it's theirs. Moral blame, if it is to be placed, shouldn't be placed on you or me or anyone else for something that happened before they were around.
Nor do I feel any guilt for taking part in this society. In this world of taxes, laws, and regulations, what choice does anyone have but to be a member of the system? If you don't agree with your government's policies and decide not to pay your taxes, you might win a small moral victory, but you're still going to be punished. If you want to live off the land, you're a vagrant, and you're going to be punished. We simply aren't afforded that choice. Though there are some who have found ways to live "off of the grid", this is neither a reasonable course of action (it does not appear to be in the best interest of the majority of people) nor does it solve any problems.

So, yes, while "man" in the abstract sense may be guilty of any given thing, it is not right to place blame on all people or to demand feelings of guilt from all people. This sense of man against nature is, in my opinion, foolish. Man is part of nature and our creations are as natural as the creations of any other animal. The beaver dam is no more or less artificial than the computer. The cities around us, what do you think they're made of? Perhaps not trees and grass, but still things from nature. Sometimes they are combined or treated in certain ways that normally would not occur in their natural setting, such as during the creation of quick-drying cement. But none of these things are completely unnatural, they are simply different forms that nature has taken.

As for the whole killing of animals thing, it does seem exceptionally cruel to run things like factory farms. And we have evolved in such a way that we can avoid such things. But let's not forget that despite our evolution, we are no better or worse than any other living being. If wolves had the capacity to factory farm sheep in an efficient and sustainable manner, I guarantee you that wolves would be doing the same thing.

Human beings are animals, and animals do what they have to in order to survive. Once survival is assured, they look for comfort. The dog plays with dog toys and rests on its dog bed. The cat climbs a post and lazily bats at dangling objects. Human beings have simply done this in a more efficient manner, and in more entertaining ways, due to our excelled intelligence.

The video is interesting, but presents things from a pessimistic viewpoint. It reminds me of being an angsty teen. Thank you for sharing, it is a nice piece of art.

The Earth will exist after the damage we have done to it, and so too will humans, we're unlikely to be utterly wiped out. What matters is what we take away from these situations.

There's no use blaming yourself for things you cannot personally control, but guilt can be a useful emotion too. If you can change your behaviour then do your part and change it.

The Day the Earth Stood Still (2008) wrote: Professor Barnhardt: There must be alternatives. You must have some technology that could solve our problem.
Klaatu: Your problem is not technology. The problem is you. You lack the will to change.
Professor Barnhardt: Then help us change.
Klaatu: I cannot change your nature. You treat the world as you treat each other.
Professor Barnhardt: But every civilization reaches a crisis point eventually.
Klaatu: Most of them don't make it.
Professor Barnhardt: Yours did. How?
Klaatu: Our sun was dying. We had to evolve in order to survive.
Professor Barnhardt: So it was only when your world was threated with destruction that you became what you are now.
Klaatu: Yes.
Professor Barnhardt: Well that's where we are. You say we're on the brink of destruction and you're right. But it's only on the brink that people find the will to change. Only at the precipice do we evolve. This is our moment. Don't take it from us, we are close to an answer.
