Let's invent a real Lightsaber. It won't be like in the movies but light can disable an opponent without causing permanent damage. A real Lightsaber would have to qualify as a walking stick for legal reasons but it could (legally) have a wide dispersal green laser and (in many jurisdictions) a 100,000 volt shock head. It should also be a defensive weapon in and of itself.

I have heard passing rumor from here and there that it is possible to make a laser stop at a certain point, i don't know how true it is but that would be so cool. Probably highly illegal if you could use it as a hand held weapon but wouldn't it be cool if we were just that much closer?

Well, a movie was made with them in it, i would be utterly astonished if no one in the scientific world looked into lightsabers in a scientific way.
