Being a religious organisation, from the FAQ.......... "and wish to become a Jedi as defined by TotJO you need to send in a valid Jedi Application and take the Simple Oath".
.... and so have a framework for a "Jedi path, until I am ready for Jedi Knighthood or I otherwise decide," that one follows "with all its duties and responsibilities." and "shall do that which is right and profess my allegiance to the Force.", while also ensuring that "During that time I promise to do my utmost to uphold the Jedi teachings, and to live a life as is worthy of a Jedi."
:side:
Haha, did I just try and avoid the question or what
For me its having my interests aligned and organized in a future-sense intelli-spiritual framework, which just so happens to also connect to the very young curiosity sparked by watching the first (3rd) movie at around pre-school age. This means it can best influence and guide my thought and action.
Since process seems to equal progress, I find structure useful, and the basic structure of the doctrine here serve's as a junction between contemplating complexity and exercising 'emptiness' - two aspects important to my own path.

I find the values and principles to be a pathway to a fulfilled life of not just myself but on the influences of others. I have been raised on the the virtues of the Force since i was young and my own personal belief influenced me onto the path of the Jedi. I believe its nature makes one compassionate and brings out the best of humanity. I find the Jedi to be the views of those who wish nothing but the greater good for not themselves but others instead. A Jedi is selfless and act for others as is the path of their life, using their abilities and knowledge as an influence and power for good in the world, making it a better place to live for all. Peace and understanding comes with a well practiced Jedi, making them a symbol of serenity and justice when needed. The Jedi are guardians of the virtues of man. They believe in the best in others, which brings out the best in a Jedi.

When George Lucus was writing Star Wars he came up with the term "Jedi" from a type of Japanese movie, as stated here: The word "jedi" is thought to have been derived by George Lucas from the Japanese word jidaigeki, a genre of historical dramas, such as The Hidden Fortress, which influenced the development of Star Wars.[1][2][3] ( I got this from : En.wikipedia.org
Jedi - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
En.wikipedia.org,. (2014). Jedi - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Retrieved 4 July 2014, from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jedi
I visualize a Jedi as a futuristic Samurai. they both have their different codes, the samurai got Bushido and the Jedi got the Jedi code. There are some that believe that the Jedi code only was in the movies and came from games, even though it was mentioned in some Star Wars books that are considered "Cannon".
I believe there is very little difference between the code of Bushido and the Jedi code, with the exception that the Jedi code comes from a fictional character. However the meaning behind it is still a very positive message and way to live.
On a personal level, a Jedi is a Warrior that stands up for what is right, defends the weak, and protects those in need. His or her greatest weapon does not have to be a sword or a lightsaber, it is his or her mind, and heart. He or she uses Intelligence, and compassion to overcome obstacles and challenges.

When Neo woke up from the Matrix and sacrificed himself for humanity
When Batman faced his fear of bats and used what he feared as his strength
When Superman spent most of his young life as the rather "normal" Clark Kent
When Frodo Baggins trekked across Middle-Earth with the burden of the ring
When Buddha realized where the real value of life existed
When Jesus exhibited the act of acceptance and forgiveness of humankind
When Luke Skywalker threw down his lightsaber and remembered who he was and where he came from
When you are able to do all of the above through being aware of the present moment and accept yourself and your flaws, to become a little more selfless through a realized connection that you have always had with every single thing around you and thus, have nothing left to fear...

En somme ...
When one can give oneself to something - a cause, an effect, an ideology - greater than oneSelf, therein one finds the Hero :
-- the Jedi.

I don't define being a jedi, there are many different types of jedi. I can only describe my type of jedi. One that does what is right, even if it isn't immediately apparent. One that puts others before self. Knowledge, wisdom, strength...mind, body, spirit...why do I consider myself one?...I just am...I'm not fully light, nor fully dark, I am balanced in the large, undefined grey area...
Quotes:
Out of darkness, he brings light. Out of hatred, love. Out of dishonor, honor-james allen-
He who has conquered doubt and fear has conquered failure-james allen-
The sword is the key to heaven and hell-Mahomet-
The best won victory is that obtained without shedding blood-Count Katsu-
All men's souls are immortal, only the souls of the righteous are immortal and divine -Socrates-
I'm the best at what I do, what I do ain't pretty-wolverine

Warning: Spoiler!
There is passion, yet there is peace
Through passion I gain strength and knowledge
Through strength and knowledge I gain victory
Through victory I gain peace and harmony
Through peace and harmony my chains are broken
There is no death, there is the force and it shall free me

What is a Jedi?
- Someone who believes in a unifying entity which is common to all people, life, or existence, which we call the Force;
- Someone who believes working in harmony with this unifying entity is preferable to working against it, and endeavours to cultivate their actions and abilities in accordance with this philosophy;
- Someone who endeavours to work from values of compassion and selflessness to achieve harmony with the Force.

A Jedi... there is a difference between knowing the path and walking the path. Just watch this video and everything will become clear:
Few are those who see with their own eyes and feel with their own hearts.
