A lot of religions practice the act of fasting. Either giving up food or some other thing for a certain amount of time. In a drug class I took our teacher asked each of us to find something in life that we relied on/were addicted to and give it up for the semester. Things that were given up were music, certain food items, caffiene, booze, drugs, hats, video games, etc. (I gave up tv and ended up reading more and being more active. It was great!)

The point was to see how life could be different and many times better without these things, you know, to get a new perspective. I was wondering how many other people might "fast" from time to time? And if anybody would be interested in trying? What are your thoughts?

The sacrificing of a vice often brings a level of clarity...I would ..but I truly don't have any vices...at a moments notice I could disappear with just the clothes I'm wearing...I don't drink, smoke, use drugs, have foods I can't do without, or anything else....being unemployed for 3 years helped to reinforce that...you learn just how little you "need" and what you really need...

That's prett B.A. ;)

But don't you ever find yourself getting a little too fond of something? Like right now I found the lovely game of bridge...and I can tell with only a weeks worth of playing (with people and also online) that I might be playing too much (the online version anywho)...same happened with solitaire.

But that's neat about being able to jam at a moments notice. You remind me of someone in my family lol.

The only thing I have any sort of emotional link to would be my dog...even though I do have family still alive...I've never really fit in with them...if she were to die, i'd still move on...I have no kids nor significant other, so no other ties to society...I'm a bit odd....I don't like forming habits and by nature am random/unorthodoxed...typical discussions with me in real life are scattered...I'm all over the place...

I don't need to fast to be thankful of what I've got. If I were homeless in this country I'd still be better off than most people...

But I don't disagree with the principle of fasting (or deprivation of non-food) for the sake of learning to appreciate it more.
