Some people can go much smaller and the price goes down accordingly. One time I lived in a 350 sq ft apartment and paid $400/month. I just built a 200 sq ft geodesic dome earth-ship greenhouse for $1k and $400 went to pay for clay because our soil doesn't have any so with clay you can do 200 sq ft for $600 and maybe 400 sq ft is $1200.
Some other methods have been to use compressed earth bricks and you make the compressor for $2k and then build unlimited sq ft and put straw-bales between the outer walls for insulation. You could also get a sawmill for $2k and cut your own wood for savings on a big house.
Few are those who see with their own eyes and feel with their own hearts.

Well where I live my buddy pays $700/month for a 2 bedroom apartment plus $100/month electric so he could own his own home in about 2 years if he got a lot for $10k and a home for $10k. Also factor in $400/month for food and suddenly earth-ships seem very attractive to people who can invest their own time for labour.Alastor wrote: Did you not say:
$10k(plus labour) to build.
That is expensive to some people, myself for example.

I would love to be..(and perhaps live)..in an earth ship. It's a great idea.

They've built them in the CO mountains and AZ desert which gets cold at night. Both straw-bale and earth-ship do well in cold climates.

I hate to point out the obvious... but there is a severe lack of ships in the earth ships...

Straw and sand and earth. And lots of work. And the land of course. I do have 40 acres here in Michigan here in the boonies I could build one at. lol. As far as money, gah. Always a road block.

they confuse recycling with repurposing. What they are doing is put tiny landfills everywhere and make people live in them...
