What, as practitioners of Jediism, are you doing to spark change in the lives of those whom you have the ability to influence? Most if not all of us have taken the simple oath, and some have taken the solemn oath; what does that mean to you and how do you live that oath in your life?

The story of The Indra in Campbell's: The Message of Myth shows us that we should not shut ourselves away and live isolated from society, but rather take part in it to evoke a measure of influence. How are you doing this, if at all?

I'm wary of becoming so involved in the study of being a Jedi that I fail to actually live my life as one. Study and knowledge of something are far different than understanding, and the ability to apply that knowledge and understanding is further still from the study of it.

Study and knowledge accumulation seems to be the first step the temple promotes via the initiates path; as one cannot have understanding without first having knowledge of that which they hope to understand. Understanding is then fostered via the apprentice & master relationship and discussions within the online community via forums after knowledge is gained. But how is application of that knowledge and understanding promoted?

Does this occur naturally? If not, what is the expectation for the application of what we learn as a result of our training and apprenticeship? How have some of the more tenured members of this order effected change in the world as a result of your lessons and learning?

I ask because I don't want to simply study and know something; I think the world has enough scholars; we need agents of change that will help usher in a new era of human consciousness. Is that what we aspire to be and are the members of this order being it?

Thank you!

Ally and I have started Heart Land Jedi, an offline training group. We have plans of growing the group to the point we are able to operate independently of parent groups, but as such, we are aiding local resources.

We are members of Four Rivers K9, Search and Rescue. fourriversk9team.org

I joined the military as a military police officer to expand my service to my community and respond to emergencies.

I am a trained EMT and Lifeguard and have used them to save people.

this question pops up every once in a while. and my answer never changes.

im not a proselytizer, or missionary or (as of now) clergy. i do not go out of my way to recruit or inform, as it has been my experience that most people neither invite nor appreciate that sentiment anyway.

so, i live a life of example. once every great while, there are those who recognize behind this jokey exterior there is a thoughtful person of substance, and hey whats that all about? me and my son are the only people i have great influence over. i raise him the way i see fit, the way that i wish i had been sometimes (tho my parents did their very best). maybe one day, HE will appreciate it. maybe one day, he will be a jedi, like his father before him.

thats about it, i guess. there is no grand design here. life gets in the way.

I think those are both excellent examples of living the code and adhering to your oaths. Thank you for sharing.

Thank you for posting this thread Allineare, we need more like it! I do what I can, babysitting the neighbors poodle while she moves to a different address right now, watching my sister to make sure she doesn't burn the place to the ground (that doesn't really count, lol), helping the elderly by snow shoveling their driveways when we get substantial snow fall. There aren't many opportunities here where I live, but that will change once I relocate to a city...

I volunteer at a couple food banks, a homeless shelter, and a local community center here. Wonderful people!

I regularly pick up trash and help keep various areas of the town as clean and tidy as I can.

I do gardening and landscaping for several people in my town, whoever likes my work and needs me.

I repair and teach basic to intermediate use of computers to people around my neighborhood.

Online, I've mentored countless people who are in severe distress with family and relationships, prevented 2 different suicides, and helped 4 different teenagers mend their relationships with their parents. All of them are doing excellent today.

If I never get a chance to run my own recording studio or tour the world with a band, all I want to do next is visit hospitals and entertain the sick.

If none of this even counted, there is one thing that trumps them all in terms of effort, dedication of heart, and affecting someone's life, and that is being a full-time single father. heh...

I teach (or train, depending on how you look at it) willing apprentices when they come along, in the fields of philosophy and spirituality. It used to be that I would have too many students to take on at any given time, but now it's rare to have even one. It's unfortunate, but I'm patient ;)
