I'm sure most of you have heard about this, but was surprised when there wasn't already a forum post about it:

This is the exact thing that I'm talking about when I say there is no hope for Islam. Why can't they protest like Buddhists? I'd like to see them light themselves on fire for once instead of everything around them.

Why can't anyone argue and be peaceful? The human condition for becoming passionate. People act without thinking. They sometimes do not question source, of worse yet, someone creates something that the opposite sides decides to use for their own means.
USA's media does this took, like the cover on Times page for Muslim rage. They ill represent the Muslims and what anyone who is a true Muslim would tell you this rage is against their religion. Islam just like Christianity is about brotherhood. That is what is disheartening about this whole process, so many people are being caught up in their passions in that moment, that creates this violence that reflects negatively.
Sadly, no I have not heard of this, I try to look at the news twice a week. I do not want to focus on such negativity.

Al Quieda (is this the right spelling?) destroyed a Buddhist statue in afganistan in the months leading up to the attacks on the world trade centre and Pentagon. The pentagon attack was played down alot more, atleast here in england, but that was destroyed aswell.

Its not that these people are muslims, its that they conduct this sort of violence in the name of their religion which they claim to be true Islam. It's being used to justify sacrifice and aggression which is being manipulated to increase power to the leadership group by destruction and fear ie; terror, hence why its called terrorism.
Unfortunately there is no arguing that the violent and diverse language does actually exist in the Quran, and so the only people who can confront this abuse of Islam is other muslims - lest it will fit right into the fearful language in the Quran of non-believers attacking Islam. The elephant in the room is that the Islamic nations seem to do very little in confronting these problems which seem to arise at all levels (convert up to Imam) and at all locations (seemingly globally) where Islamic communities exist. I know it has happened at small scales, but nothing consummate with the threat in my opinion.
There was some old buildings in Timbuktu that were destroyed by Muslim's as well earlier this year, even though they were to Islamic leaders from 500 years ago. Apparently a tomb can be no higher then 15cm above the ground or some such nonsense.
"It's a real loss for people in the town, in the region and on the continent. Timbuktu was a center of Islamic learning, a very significant center — there is lots of internal and external evidence of this. But Ansar Dine is ignorant of this. For them, there is only one book and it's the Quran. All this other (Islamic) learning is inconsequential to them." The Chairman of the Malian Manuscript Foundation Michael Covitt, said from New York that the action led to "generations and generations of culture being destroyed."

The problem with islam is that it is a very condescending and anger-based religion. "jihad" is "the struggle", and is held by some denominations as a pillar of islam...
The main difference between islam and christianity (which is is 90% like islam) is that Jesus loves everyone and died for everyone's sins. So, as I understand it, despite sharing many beliefs and values, christianity is 'more' peaceful because no matter how 'wrong' an infidel is, Jesus loves him/her (and christians love Jesus).
Needless to say, there are two sides to a story like this. Old scars are fuel for conflict... I knew a buddhist thai woman who HATED mulsims. She'd openly say if she saw one injured on the side of the road she'd leave them to die there.... Pretty tough stuff.

You may be right there ren, About Islam. But I have read a little of the Qu'ran and the stories in it are - as I have said before - the complete oposite of a rage-war.
The stories describe such things as a young boy using very diplomatic means to avoid conflict and retribution from the masters of his different abodes and vocations.
I'm just dreading the use of the word "Interpretation" being used in this entry... :S
