Are you afraid? was created by
You wake up in the middle of the night, a cold sweat running down your back, you hear a scream from downstairs in the kitchen "HELP ME" Your mother cries, as you leap from your bed just as your about to go down the stairs, you hear "NO Don't go! I Heard the voice too!" Coming from your mothers bedroom.

Which one do you believe?

My question(s) for you fellow members of TOTJO is...

What are you afraid of?

Biggest fear you've conquored?

How do you deal with fear?

My greatest fear is failure in what could be a crucial moment like the one you just laid out for us, Doctor V. Letting down others that I've personally sworn to do my best to help when I can.

The biggest fear I've conquered... a fairly first-world one. The fear of rejection. By overcoming my anxiety I've embraced who I am and no longer hide my personality. Rather than buckle to what I can only define as the oppression of intellect or individuality, I took those things to heart and stepped out.

I deal with fear with training and hope. It depends on what the fear is, but I have begun to train myself so that if I am ever placed in a situation of danger, that I can rise to the occasion and not fail.

Interesting, I'd probably quietly check out the voice coming from my mother’s room if it were closest.

As for what I fear, well a lot of things can make me nervous (sliding off the road in the winter, wondering if my scuba tank is on tight enough, is that spider a brown recluse?), but most of those I rarely ever think about and they're usually fairly easy to conquer. I think the scariest thing is watching others make deadly decisions. You want what's best for them, but you can't live their life for them nor should you.

How I chase off fear or nervousness is by thinking through the problem. Sometimes breaking it down can help you realize what you're really afraid of and that it's usually not a big deal. Does it matter if it's a brown recluse? Do you plan on touching it? No, so just let the spider be and walk away...unless it is and it's on your bed. ;)

First of all, that is FREAKY. Which voice would I believe? Neither, until I see more for myself. I'd grab a bat or some type of object I could use as a makeshift weapon and cautiously move around the building. I'd peek behind corners before moving into rooms and walk very cautiously - like a marine. Of course, I would NOT leave the lights off. That's just silly. I need to see and assess. Even if it gives my position away, I need to see. And I don't think it would kill me to turn on the light in my own house - even if there was an intruder.

What are you afraid of?
Tarnishing my reputation. You see, whether or not people think highly or poorly of themselves, everyone has a "reputation": how people view that person. I feel that, for the most part, many people respect me. However, I also know I have a lot of enemies (through out elementary, middle, and high schools). Life would be extremely difficult if my friends and allies suddenly all became my enemies because they view me poorly or with hate, scorn, etc. How I preserve my reputation is not to say and do things that will cause my friends and allies to lose respect for me. In general, a reputation is a VERY fragile thing.

Biggest fear you've conquored?
I actually have many fears. Honestly, I don't know which to describe - (I don't even know if I want to describe any of them...) I'll just say that I really don't know what is my biggest fear that I conquered.

How do you deal with fear?
In the Star Trek series, the Starfleet Captains are very disciplined, intelligent, and respected people in the Star Trek universe. However, they are normal, ordinary human beings with no special powers or fighting abilities. Often times, Captains are captured by the enemies and presented with intimidation, torture, and the possibility of death. When faced with these fears, they breath, retain their poise, and remain calm.

I try my best to emulate the image of a Starfleet Captain when faced with fear (although I don't succeed all the time). When faced with fear, I breath. I rationalize and demystify the situation. And I step back and look at the big picture - for example, when I'm about to do a zip line or thrill ride, I remind myself that tons of people have done this specific ride before, even old ladies, so there is no physical risk involved - just my own, irrational fear.

I don't think I have a fear that I know of yet, I'm not saying I'm fearless I'm just saying athat whatever I will fear (which I'm sure will be something) is something that I haven't yet come across. Either that or I have a fear and I'm just too blind to see it.

But in answer to this:
"You wake up in the middle of the night, a cold sweat running down your back, you hear a scream from downstairs in the kitchen "HELP ME" Your mother cries, as you leap from your bed just as your about to go down the stairs, you hear "NO Don't go! I'd stay probably stay on my room and be on my guard. I don't care about or have any emotion/feeling for my mother except a few negative ones so I wouldn't be concerned about any trouble she may be in. Although I'd stay on my guard incase something came for me.

I'd have to dig deep into the moment and trust my instincts and The Force to guide my actions. Such situations are not resolvable in hypothetical but in the moment of action.

Reassess the situation constantly as you move, first to the nearest threat. It would be dangerous to go downstairs if a threat was on the top floor as being above is an advantage in a fight most usually but also it could put yourself between 2 threats, ie surrounded.

Focus on getting knowledge so you can act wisely

What are you afraid of?

I don't walk around carrying any particular fear, but in terms of biology I guess it's caused by the conscious mind falling into a sort of shadow from the subconscious mind shifting into fight or flight, or freeze, responses. This partial recruiting of the sympathetic nervous system in this way makes us feel uncomfortable and our ability to be rational feels reduced.

Biggest fear you've conquored?

That's tricky. I almost think the greater fear someone has known the more fearful they can become, almost like its a old wound that springs open. So I'd have to wonder how to define conquer, would it be survive? If so then the causative agent might become less relevant to the question, and question might be better asked what is the most fear you've ever experienced. I've engaged the 'flight' mode, I've engaged the 'fight' mode but I haven't had a 'freeze' mode yet.

How do you deal with fear?

As mentioned already, preparation and training even if its just visualization. Imagination is an important tool in this process, and actively imagining bad situations and exploring different options can make the unexpected seem less unusual. Watching movies and reading books can help.

Whichever of the two is actually my mother's voice...

Doctor V wrote: My question(s) for you fellow members of TOTJO is...

What are you afraid of?

Being afraid and, perhaps, myself.

Doctor V wrote: Biggest fear you've conquored?

Fear of darkness/"evil"/death/mystery.

Doctor V wrote: How do you deal with fear?

I don't know that I have a set method of "dealing" with fear. Being completely honest I don't fear many things and don't feel afraid very often. When something scares me its usually an individual ocurrence, not a specific "thing" that I fear all the time.

I suppose I tend to analyze the reason for my fear then decide on how to neutralize the fear based on that knowledge.

For context: I have been through several periods in which I faced death on a daily basis due to my own decisions and by choice. I have mostly and to the best of my ability conquered fear at this point in my life. The only times I ever feel fear are in rare "heat of the moment" situations where fear is still (unfortunately) somewhat of a reflex reaction.

“Though, as the crusade presses on, I find myself altogether incapable of staying here in saftey while others shed their blood for such a noble and just cause. For surely must the Almighty be with us even in the sundering of our nation. Our fight is for freedom, for liberty, and for all the principles upon which that aforementioned nation was built.” - Patrick “Madman of Galway” O'Dell
