This is my final wisdom outburst of the day. I grow steadily more wise from about 6:45 PM (UK time) onwards
To repent isn't to curse yourself over things that you or others consider to be a sin; it simply means: Turn around!
Stop following the wicked path and come back to the True Path. Also it does not mean to simply go back to the "life" you had before all of your troubles started, inch by inch dabbling in the things that you found on that dark journey. On the contrary, it is a way of resisting the force(s) that are encoraging you to commit those very acts.
Consider the word repent along with another thing from the bible:
Conform no longer to the patterns of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind
Belive me, it's worth it

I believe in the power of repenting.
Not to the extent that you hate yourself and dwell miserably on wrongs that you have done, but repenting in the sense that you admit to yourself mistakes that you have made and allow yourself to see the pain that may have been caused, whilst also accepting that we cannot change the past and so must move on.
I think that hiding these things from yourself can result in a bottling up and accumulation of negative energy whereby deep inside you you know that you have done wrong and you develop a deep-seated resentment of yourself, or perhaps of things that you try to put the blame on.
In this way, I think of repenting as being a kind of self-forgiveness - not a 'get out of jail free' card, but a way of moving on from our mistakes, learning from them and becoming a better person.
