What is Freedom?
Code:
1. the state of being free or at liberty rather than in confinement or under physical restraint: He won his freedom after a retrial. 2. Exemption from external control, interference, regulation, etc. 3. The power to determine action without restraint.

So judging by number 2, are we ever really free? Constantly under our governments ruling?

My question for you guys is

What is your personal definition of freedom?

I actually think the second definition had to do with objects and not people. For example, the United States is free because no other country can order us around! (That's my conservative side talking again, haha.)

But seriously, I believe freedom is both a personal and societal status. To be free, personally, is to have your mind in your own, full control and act as you wish for your entire life - hopefully (and coincidentally) in line with laws and rules.

To be free, socially, is to be granted certain human and civil rights that promote your freedom of choice and thought.

well like the liberalism, you´re free, but when your freedom affect to other people freedom you can´t be free, that´s why we have rules; so freedom is live without affecting the others.

Yeah, there are many types of freedoms out there. Each are applicable to different people, cultures, and organization variously throughout the span of time they exist.

I would say the definition would hinge on what that actor felt it needed to act or think on independent of external influence. Or even the influence the actor exerts over himself by proxy from an external influence. i.e. societal norms. Additionally, it has to do with the amount of external influence the actor is willing to accept before considering themselves 'oppressed'.

Doctor V, I think you hit the nail on the head when you said freedom from fear. Not absence of fear, per se, but when it has no bearing on the decisions you make and the life you live. There are plenty of people out there who enjoy all manner of freedoms, yet because of fear never become what they might have been.

There's a great quote I tried to look up and failed to locate the citation for...perhaps I wrote it, then. Anyways, here it is:

"Hell for me is when, in my dreams, the man I am is confronted by the man I could have been."

The closer those two are, the more free you are.

Jedi Knight

The self-confidence of the warrior is not the self-confidence of the average man. The average man seeks certainty in the eyes of the onlooker and calls that self-confidence. The warrior seeks impeccability in his own eyes and calls that humbleness. The average man is hooked to his fellow men, while the warrior is hooked only to infinity.

We are free.

We decide to let the outside world affect us. We enslave ourselves to life. But, what a joyous imprisonment.

What a good topic to think about. It's so very abstract, and I agree with most that was posted here.

Freedom - Free to think and feel the way I want. If my mind is free, I am free. I can decide to disobey government and society if I so decide (because really it all starts in the mind) and if I'm clever and lucky enough then I have the possibility of freeing myself from whatever might be restraining me. Of course some things are a little harder to break, like gravity but even then astronauts are able to free themselves from earth and float around in space.
