I often find when my mind is wandering, I'm completely oblivious to everything and even repetetitive tasks become difficult. Myself and another cook had to wrap 1000 bundles of green beans in bacon. That was just the beginning of the day to be ready for all four catering events (a normal Saturday).
Unfortunately I was focused on Sunday ... on the new Spiderman movie ... on my expiring Sprint contract and if I was going to jump shop ... on the car bill ....... My mind was everywhere except where I was and what I was doing.
After 30 minutes, I opened my eyes and saw I had accomplished nothing. No problem ... use the Force ... concentrate.
It of course worked. I didn't change my technique. I didnt move much faster. But those little bundles started bundling up faster just the same. Thus connected with the moment, the rest of the kitchen became known to me with no great effort. Hey, Jim, before you smoke you should keep your bacon from burning. Nancy, there's an order hanging ... you got it? Why is that plate still in the window?
Focused in this way didn't hurt my planning, either. I was more aware of future tasks in fact and how we were going to hit out deadlines.
The bundles were done. Jim wondered how I did so much more than him when I didn't seem to be moving particularly faster. I guess the Force was with me. An amusing anecdote to me, anyway.
