a question for you all was created by
As Jedi we must not judge, treat everyone as equals and keep the peace.

So when does a joke go to far?

After all, all jokes can hurt no matter how silly they are.

So should we as Jedi not make jokes nor humor those who do?

It's a difficult situation which is why I want your opinion on the matter.

A joke can go too far when: it's a lie you lead people to believe. When it causes harm or drama to other people. Or when it makes you looks like something you're not (good or bad).

Lies are not jokes. Making fun of other people is no joke. Teasing is a borderline and I think you should sort of know someone a little tiny bit before you tease with them. I can say, I enjoy a bit of banter once in a while, but it needs to stay appropriate to the individual.

I don't enjoy interacting with people who take jokes too far and will distance myself from them automatically. I don't think it's judging, though. Perhaps I'm wrong. I want to surround myself with uplifting, honest, and honorable people who are real and true to themselves. :)

I guess.. if you're talking about jokes like knock-knock jokes and yo-mama jokes.. I don't get offended by those things very easily at all, but I also don't tell many. Mostly because I can never remember them, but I'm more into witty, sarcastic humor.

I talk too much...

Well it depends on what type of person you are, you have to figure out where to draw that line.

Like myself I honestly believe that a joke is a joke and it can go as far it can but that's because I probably have a very disturbing sense of humor.

Honestly just because you're a jedi doesn't mean you are one dimensional and are like every other jedi. Every person is different.

I try not to tease others...

I mostly make fun of myself....

We need to remember that most others don't mean offence, and we can't let ourselves be easily offended....

Like Reliah said, it is definitely good to build a relationship of sorts before really doing too much I think....

People who want to tease me, and don't know me, take things for granted...

I have physical world friends here at TOTJO, and they can tease me in ways others cannot...

Every relationship is different, as is every person, as Kawda mentioned...

That's ok, Reliah. I know how to remedy such a situation:

;)

But anywho, back to seriousness. Pardon my language, but i'm a bit of a smartass (as most of us here are, lol). I joke around with people a lot. BUT, I always warm up with new people. I'll say something very simple and uninsulting to their intelligence just to get a feel for their sense of humor. I gradually work my way up the sarcasm and joking chain until I find that nerve. That's where I know what types of jokes they don't find funny and I back it down to the previous level. Sometimes I hit that nerve, sometimes that nerve doesn't seem to exist, or perhaps it's a nerve that I would have to sacrifice my moral values to hit, which aint gonna happen, lol.

As far as teasing is concerned, I think it really depends. There are people that I tease, but I don't do it every single day. Just whenever something related to it comes up, and it's just a quick whip of the tongue with wink and then I move on.

But I never, and I repeat NEVER go as far as racist jokes. The furthest I go with that is when I say "it's because i'm black, isn't it?" (no, i'm not really black, lol). And I only do that around my black friends who find it funny, and, like teasing, I don't over use it.

I liked what Kawda Dopor said: we're not one-dimensional just because we're Jedi. That being said, I feel I joke a lot, too. Don't get me wrong, I'm very serious about being a Jedi, but I'm not going to deny my humorous nature either. I'm like Hadi Apollos and I enjoy making people laugh, even at my own expense.

But again, my nature is different than most. I don't think you could offend me if you tried; I just don't get offended anymore. I've spent most of my life defending and being offended by those that dissed my former religion. Those days (and that frustration) is over. Life is too short to be offended by jokes.

But again, that being said, as a Jedi, I'm very willing to correct a wrong, too. If ANY Jedi comes to me and says, LTK, you bothered me by this and this comment. I will be very accommodating to them and try to understand the issue from their perspective and I'm not afraid to apologize if I need to.

I love being a Jedi and I don't want my actions to turn others away from that path and so I'm always willing to listen and improve based on constructive criticism.
