@Katana_Geldar
any live steel groups of course use blunted swords ;)
and i've been clubbed pretty hard in the SCA as well as knocked huge men to the ground with a single swing :)

As for swords... did you know a proper broadsword is not designed to cut, it doesnt have a true blade, it is a clubbing weapon, the next ranks (based on viking warfare) had the bladed weapons (axes etc) who finished off the wounded the broadswords left behind.

this is so true my friend. the most blunt of all swords would be the claymore.

Also, there is a famous fight between two samurai. One 'forgot' his sword, so carved a bokken from an boat oar.... he wont he fight too... moral to that tale but i'll leave you all to work it out.

the battle of kojiro and musashi. you can find renditions of this battle in classic japanese cinema.

As far as im aware, SCA (Seal Knot Society?) are re enactment purists and are thus rightly 'picky/fussy' about what people wear etc. I can understand and appreciate this as someone who is very interested ancient/medieval warfare and mistakes in movies etc (such as Gladiator) do irritate me a little.

don't assume that all members of the SCA are gonna hassle you. I know several Lords whose garb consists of sweatpants and a tabard ;) the SCA is an open society where the only rule is to have fun and participate. there wont be anyone telling you \"hey thats not period, you have to fix it!\" or ridicule you. the only time i have seen anyone get crap is if you are a mundane wearing street clothes and trying to get free beer :)

At the end of the day, one decides what they want to do and joins a society that accommodates them, no point in trying to force your opinions on others when the majority wont take any notice of you. IF SCA wont let you dress as XYZ then dont go there... would a StarTrek group let you wear jedi garb? I dont think so...

i fully intend on wearing a jedi robe to the SCA (once i make one ;) )

There's also Nova Roma, they're like the SCA of Rome though.

And a lorica segmentata is a wonderful piece of armour, better than a lot of medieval armour actually due to it's manuverability. And those helmets the gladiators wear cover your whole face, you just need to find one made of carbonised steel that won't get slashed if it gets hit with a sword....sorry, gladius

I went to Legio XX web site and was able to get patterns to most of the armor variations in different Roman periods. They have a wealth of information and sources. I have considered Nova Roma, am still.

Roma Victa!!!
