I am a member of the SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism) which is a medieval recreationist group that has Arts and Sciences as well as HUGE martial warfare events. I personally am a Sword and Board Fighter in House Inverted and have been for over a decade :)

The battles are not coreographed like a Civil war reinactor, but rather are a martial art where you can get quite bruised. (Although there are minimum armor requirements and safety marshals)

There even once was a lightsaber tourney :D

Shout out if you are a member or have heard of it or are just curious :)

I've always have been a fan of ancient Roman history, more particulary the century. I've spent a few years looking for a re-enactment group. But everywhere I lived, none existed close enough or never responded to my inquiry.

Hey! I happen to be a Civil War reenactor, and I will say right now that I have never done a coreographed fight before :) It's true I promise, I have done 6 fights, none set-up.

Really? I thought you re-enacted particular battles.

actually the SCA is world wide, with 19 separate kingdoms. if you tell me what state you live in, i can get you a link for the group in your area :)

I have a little problem with the SCA in that they are so rigid with their version of the Middle Ages, which is the High Middle Ages with heraldry and chivalry, that it leaves little room for people to be creative.

I'm part of a more free Middle Ages group where I can be what I want and costume myself who I want to go, a Romano Briton! This would not go down well with SCA

Well, IDK, i live right around the corner from Garret and maybe i might be able to convince my husband to see about attending something, if your events are open to the public. Also, we used to belong to a group called HMR before it went under several years ago. My sister even still has the rules and regulations somewhere. We were in a few faires with SCA and a friend of mine down the street from where i used to live was a member. It is fun, the only problem i ever saw was the use of those heavy padded weapons. We used real weapon on each other. Kendo sticks were at the first level of fighting, with pads, then when light ren (fencing foils and the like, with heavier padding/armour) then heavy ren (sword and leather/steel armour or thick padding) and finally full steel or heavy steel (full on swords, axes, etc, and full armour). The way to determine who wins is who ever hasn't been hit on the body at the end of the match, which i believe consisted of three rounds. I ended up taking a full Knight in an Escondito event, that sucked. Long story, tell ya later.

I haven't heard anything about how they do their era's etc. I usually Play a Celt named Donella. My husband usually plays a European who was brought up by a Ronin. The Japanese may have kept to themselves greatly but it was not completely unheard of for some to leave the islands. Anyway, those are our things.

:)

that is not how it is in the SCA nowadays. there are several HUGE roman houses out there. (and they are fun to smash into :D )
whoever told you that the SCA is only high middle ages are the kind of SCA folk i refer to as Douche Bags ;)
I myself am a Dark Ages German.

A better way to think of it as any time period before Firearms became the norm.
