On the idea of going to mars " Do we need to establish a gradual approach to permanence , to accept the fact that people, once they go there , are very valuable? Let's have them stay here for a while and teach other people. You need more than six or seven or eight people . You need 40 50 60 . You need more people there (mars) than you can bring back in one or two missions. What does this mean ? It means I have a career here on earth that prepares me on to embark on a new career on Mars. Is this the way most people think humans will go to Mars? No , I don't think so. We need to begin there ; to have human beings go to some place where they have to live in harmony togeather. Do we know how to really live in harmony with a small group of people ? It's very easy to say ... we will worry about that when the situation comes , but that's one of the more difficult things we will have to face , rather than radiation or bone deconditioning or what ever it is. It is how you get along with the people your supposed to be working with . " Buzz Aldrin 2008 The book is called Wisdom by Andrew Zuckerman.
My question Temple , why go anywhere when we don't even have here ... strait ?
Better yet my encouragment , fix here so when we get there , we already got it covered. Thoughts ?
All my heart Temple !

It's not that hard to get along when you have to, like you would on Mars. Hundreds of military people and sailors do it every day and in very cramped quarters. Further need creates innovation that is why so much exploring was done when the world was in strife. We would not have the global connection we do now if we waited until we had it all together to start exploring other nations

Been there done that , I've even lived in "harmony " with my enemy at their table and my enemy at mine. I think it's to each of us to make that or not make it, all is possible .

Trickle down... pushing the edge of technology advances the body of it, such that it increases the level of technology for everyone else over time. But it begs the question, at what cost, and if considering that question in terms of human experience, then space exploration will indeed be a very real challenge for those undertaking it. More then they might expect IMO.
So in the same way, by a few pioneers doing it, they might discover (the hard way) ways of coping and getting along which can then benefit the rest of lucky poor mugs enjoying the most ideal place available to us. That is why I think.
If, for example, Elon Musk sent hundreds of civilians to Mars, then I am fairly certain it would be a big problem quite quickly. As there is effectively 'nothing' out there, sucking emptiness which is not compatible with life, a place like Mars is quite literally a nice representation of a type of 'hell'! I don't think it would suit many people.
And I'd think they should all spend 12 months in an closed underwater habitat prior to get them used to the reality that its basically a prison but with bigger risk... and if they could be delivered to it by a 3 month transit in a nuclear sub it might be ideal - as a primer. Or even better a Moon base. I doubt any of it would be fun, but things like high fidelity virtual reality and perhaps tailored pharma might in the future be able to train people faster to handle it, that work life balance is so refined that coping is possible, and for coping to be possible the idea of it as 'desirable' must be tangible for the majority!! At that point though people lose the training benefit and use it for entertainment and miss the point entirely.
So for spacefarers, I think they'd need specific training in mastery of self-conscious emotions (their good side and bad side), social-conscious emotions (etiquette, empathy and diplomacy), and systems engineering (of body, machine, and information). I happen to think that is the same thing as what a Jedi would ideally be, as a path of self development, and that places like Earth are the easiest places we'll ever get to learn those skills. One day humanity might need it if it wants to survive a bit longer. The problem is its so easy here we all get lazy and fall into the same old traps
Edit: wikipedia page on self-conscious emotions states "Acquiring the ability to perform self-conscious emotions may be relatively difficult, but does bring benefits. The main benefits being those of social harmony and social healing."

Number one thing that any/everyone can do at any time is to make a personal commitment to not being a petty, vindictive person, who holds onto grudges and nurses resentments. Its the simplest thing in the world, though it also difficult because it is a mental skill that takes time and practice to get good at and feels damn impossible at first.
Now, i do not in any way mean to suggest not holding people accountable, or pretending (within ourselves) to not have hard feelings towards someone when we really do, nor lathering false sugar all over our communications. If youve paid any attention to my posts over the years you will know that i despise that sort of thing. Dishonesty is either a deliberate tactical maneuver with a pragmatic and justifiable rationale behind it, or else it is a character weakness, that ultimately allows people and organizations to deteriorate irrevocably. The truths that people are ignoring are the truths in the most need of being acknowledged.
Instead, it means each of us being honest within ourselves about our own short comings, and in considering the fact that we are still "a work in progress", allowing others to be flawed in their own ways as well. Allowing, not enabling.
To relate my own experience: theres several people here who ive "had words with", theres not one who i actually resent, personally. In a small community conflict is bound to happen. But i believe in the sincerety of everyone who frequents this domain and i see us as sharing a bond of affection for this space and for its purpose. Even though we may disagree about any manner of things and even of we "rub each other the wrong way", we are ultimately on the same team, and we are all basically doing the best that we know how. Remembering that makes it much easier to forgive others their imperfections and to "live in harmony".
I also wish to mention that the natural world aka the real world is brutal, and to live in harmony with brutality means to be brutal from time to time yourself. So i dont consider "harmony" to necessarily be the same thing as "placidity".
Anyway, thats my contribution to this topic: dont hold grudges or nurse resentments. Ive learned that trick and i can eventually learn to like people, even when i think that i dont like them; thats how i know it works!
