Letter of the Law or Spirit of the Law

Just so he knows I'm on his side (sort of) -

Contrary to popular belief, law enforcement has the power of "discretion" (where I am at least) and can choose not to prosecute minor crimes (such as traffic violations). So, by the letter of the law, police are empowered to adhere to the spirit of the law except in serious cases (which really, you wouldn't anyway).

Yeah, I am familiar with this - My local town (in SA, as far as it goes) lads are pretty chill with anything that's not wildly unsafe, and when I lived in Craigieburn and later down south - top blokes (and sheilas) all around unless you were clearly being a knob.

Right now I'm in Sydney, where the boys in blue have personalities on par with a pile of old cinder blocks, and it is a long weekend, so dishing out fines is the name of the game

Also I have SA plates on my car, and as far as I can tell the basic assumption of anyone who lives on the coast is "People from SA, NT or WA are all meth addicts and probably stole the car" so I might as well have a target painted on me that says "give me a swab test and ask me stupid questions"
