Temple-wide LIVE Chat

Hiya

Its my goal to organize a Temple-wide voice chat on either Skype or Hangouts.
This chat will take place either on Sunday April 9 or Saturday April 22, Sunday April 23.

So we know that neither Skype nor Google Hangouts can support as many as a few dozen people. If what I recall from waybackwhen still holds true the limit is set to 10 or thereabouts and in terms of synchronicity and transmission quality it's struggling even at that. Now, the idea itself is great, I'd love for this to come back. I don't know if the Skype group is still around, but it was so crowded that to follow the chat was impractical most of the time and as soon as the member counts exceeded the maximum simultaneous voice call capacity, those swiftly went away, too.
What persisted longer due to just how much better the quality was, was Google. It still had its limitations, but due to the relative unpopularity of the social network in comparison to the popular messenging client that is Skype, the attendant count after the first few tries was always low, so there seldom was any problem to speak of there. Unfortunately that is also what demotivated people from coming back to our hangout saturdays, and so while we do have permanent public rooms here and a new and modern one here , nobody comes back to them any more...

Thanks though for bringing back some attention to the idea. Maybe this time it'll stick for a while longer...

May I suggest Discord. Discord has taken the "game-chat" world by storm and is poised to render Skype, TeamSpeak, and Adobe Connect obsolete. It is free, easy to use, available in browser, as a chrome extension, windows app, android app, and ios app. There are text and voice channels and their development schedule should bring video chat and screen share within the year. Anyone can create their own servers and set its privacy, as well as create roles for users and assign them as required. It is also very light on system resources in all of its platforms. It would be very easy to have it setup permanently as well, not just for the occasion you cited in your post.

Random idea probably not supported by any of them, but if max users on a call is say 10, then if sets of 9 users were in a call and that call was able to join another call with 9 different users, who each also had 8 other users on each call - then you could have 90 people in a call without exceeding the 10 connections per call...... unless my math is wrong. If it were at all possible it might need some communication protocol though, otherwise people will be stepping all over each other.

In the UTC timezone it is already Saturday. I wanted to let you all know that I'd be keen to have a voice chat with all who are available on Sunday, April 9th at 16:00 utc on Skype.
