I think human is both an identification of our species and a metaphor for a basic standard of behavior. "Human" decency. In my opinion this is an evolving point somewhere in the middle of a scale between good and evil. We expect people we meet to be meet this sort of minimum proposition. The "average" person. Relative to this point you have heroes and villains; people who help and people who hurt.
Human is the dividing line between the dualities that define us. We aren't perfect. We aren't evil. We can't say we're really anything because we, as humans, are "lukewarm". So the basic "human" path is like a sine wave constantly bending up towards good and down towards evils. And we have cycles in which each polarity seems to hold sway over us. Monsters are created by their opposition to perceived threats; fears. Messiahs are created to free us of those fears and represent love and forgiveness, charity, and light. What is "human" is always fluid because it always wants more; whether that means more money or more love. Those with the one often come to appreciate what they have less and less and their desire for the other grows. Ultimately, "human" is a struggle between identities and labels. That turmoil and conflict reflects in how we treat each other. And because we want to be treated better we separate the human from the divine and use the divine as a measuring stick by which to judge ourselves.
