TotJO App
Hrafn wrote: When someone use the app to log in he does it trough a link to the site login, he does not log in the app at all. Gmail, Facebook, Twitter etc. use this system too so when you have created security on your website you have it on your app too and you're done. The only thing that the app can actually do with your data is recording your id an pwd when you log in (as a keylogger) and save or send them somewhere.
It seems by reading this bit above here, that for all intents and purposes (and if such be the case, this *may* be WORLDS simpler), what you wish to create is something like a simple web browser type program, though basically dedicated to surfing the Temple, yes?
In which case, creating one may even be a non-issue, if you consider... the problems you might be having accessing the Temple via smartphone (be it iPhone or Android) may just be the browser you're using. I have phones of both OS'es, so I've tried a bunch (though my iPhone is an ancient model 3GS, my daughter's is far more recent)... if FireFox doesn't do it, nor Chrome (either should do *fairly* well), there are quite a number of well-made browsers that are quite lightweight without having to be "bare-bones" browsers that work just fine.
I'm not trying to throw a wet blanket on your creativity here, but even if you really feel your creative juices flowing, it should be considered that a non-browser type dedicated app might not be the way to go, for the simple reason that you'd need to devote quite a bit of your ongoing time to development and constant upgrading - newer phones, newer brands/models of phones, etc. (we've all seen how in the review comments of apps in the app stores, many say things like, "great app on my friend's phone, but won't work on the most recent Nexus - when will it be available for my phone?" etc.) - the headaches are constant and manifold.
However, it seems that a more simplified *web browser* app would be less of an ongoing hassle, as all phones tend to be built in an optimised way to communicate well with browsers of most any type (as really, how else would a phone get online?) - and really, browser apps, really do only one thing, are fairly much the same, beyond setup and looks, and whether one might be more tweaked for RSS/news feeds, or tweaked to be faster with video sites such as YouTube without hogging resources, etc. - you know.
So if you made a browser app that was more friendly for forums and their threads, as well as for ease of video viewing (wall shares, TotJO curriculum, etc.), that might just be superb - in fact, it my do well for other Jedi churches and forums as well, in which case, you might lend it a looser moniker and call it simply a "Jedi Browser"...
...now, I'm inordinately ignorant of much on this regard, beyond from the user end of things (is it obvious? lol), so perhaps I'm making a fool of myself here? Or does this make any viable sense to anyone?
Just thought I'd toss that idea in here

PS: If you want me to complete this project you should know that I have maximum 1 or 2 hours to work on it every day, I created my last app in 2014 and this one is quite a challenge so I can not make promises on release date. It can take me 3 weeks as well as 3 months, I really can not make a prediction right now but I promise you I will work on it as hard as I can.
Hrafn,
I might have missed it but I'm curious to your background? You said you have programing? Just friendly curiosity more than anything. You can PM me if you wish.

The idea is the same: create a good graphic portal or homepage or whatever you want to call it that makes navigating through the website easier. Anyway, the term "dedicate browser app" is the most appropriate I think.
J_Roz I catch the opportunity to reply to you here but you can pm me if you want to.
I graduated from experimental scientific high school (here schools are split, you choose at the beginning of your first year if you want to attend a scientific high school, a humanistic one, one for learning languages or a technical institute) in 2014 one year in advance.
Later that year I began university when I was 18 years old and I'm still here (I'm 20 now) studying theoretical physics, probably I'll get my BhD next year, finger crossed!
Next I plan to study for a PhD in astrophysics or quantum mechanics, I'm still struggling choosing one. In the meanwhile I'm working on a private project of applied physics for bionics and I'm collaborating with a professor of mine for a paper on quantum tunneling.
My background on programming comes from the bionic project I mentioned above and a couple of things I did when I was in high school. I designed an app for students to keep record of grades, class timetable etc. and another one to monitor a scientific experiment that was installed for students to work on when I was there.

Hrafn wrote: Tellhane your first two points describe smoothly what I imagined for the app to be. I really appreciate your help, I know how to do thing for iOS but I surely need help for the Android part.
My idea was just to create a mobile-friendly version of the website on a app. Just a graphic portal basically, no hardcore programming or weird things at all.
EDIT:
Jestor your point is really good. I can understand your worries, if you will consider the project in the future I will be at your disposal, I'm happy to help if I can.
As I said when I opened this thread it is a long shot, but I tried
P.S. still struggling to imagine a Jedi-hater that sniff out data from here to destroy the website. Count Dooku are you out there?
Just joking, your caution is a good thing and as a user of the website I feel more safe knowing that you and the Council are really cautious about security.
You missed the attacks of another group a few years ago, they were banging on the doors, trying to access the admin section......
It does happen, but, ren, our Lead SysAdmin takes security very serious, and I too like that, lol...
Im not telling you to give up, I am just saying there are many things to consider...
People get the impression I step in and try to stop growth, but rather I am just trying to make sure all things are as considered as much as they can be,
But to some, that is 'poo-pooing' of ideas, lol...

Really? I never believed something like this could happen here

Never thought that, don't worry, I'm not giving up, I'm just getting informed about everything that have to be considered
Always ready to go on

Has nothing to do with jedi hate, its about money, data is money, people will break in to wherever they can find exploits, download everything they can, do searches, and if there is any data in there that can be used to help get personal information for sake of setting up credit or even using that information to do over the phone password resets/requests at other websites/businesses for the sake of getting the more important information and getting credit card info that way, to the people who do that they sell that data for money. They don't care where it comes from or who, they just care about whether its exploitable or not, and if they find any useful data or not. There are quite a few people who make a living doing only that.

But I'm not sure we have the tech expertise at staff level to vet the code.... so I'd hate to see anyone go to too much effort only for us not be able to use it - but I'm sure Council would love to see any plans you've got. Progress might just be a little slow as its new ground AFAIK. Unless the Tech Team here have done App dev, I dunno if they have!? Some folk do have some programming experience (incl. me) at various levels, so maybe.
So with all that in mind, you can contact me as Council Secretary via email (in my sig) or PM. Certainly a good background project while you do the IP and work towards Apprenticeship etc!!!!
