Jack of All Trades vs Renaissance Man

A function of available time I guess, otherwise it will dictated by career focus probably. It's also very subjective because there will always be someone who knows more then you, and someone who knows less. So where a person might sit could be determined more by what others know in comparison!!

My outer focus was specialized (electro-mechanical, aerospace), and my inner focus generalist (health, spirituality, religion).... but as specialization is achieved in any area you can shift focus to other things, so perhaps the Renaissance Person is the one who has achieved multiple specializations, relative to most everyone around them.

I think though specialization not only includes knowing most everything that needs to be know about something, and being able to do it well, but also a capacity to keep current with changes in the field. It's the later which also create the opportunity for the Renaissance Person to shift from achiever to discoverer.

Which is sort of where I tip my hat to the fictional classes, as the effort could be seen in that light of focus areas. I'd probably suggest;
1. electro-mechanical-logical
2. medical-psychology-empathic
3. social-business-narrative

Mostly because initially, as mentioned, my outer focus was 1 (specialize) and my inner was 2 (generalize), but these days I'm working on 3. (temporal adjustment)
:side:

Such that if your in category 2 for your main outer focus, you could apply logical mechanical constructs to orientate perspectives and narrative social constructs to contextualize transformations.
Or if in category 3 as your main outer focus, you could apply psychological or medical concepts to orientate perspectives while assessing compartmentalized functional relationships to contextualize transformations.
And like me if in category 1 as main outer focus, you could use psychological or medical concepts to orientate perspectives and narrative social constructs to contextualize transformations.
Orientating perspectives to humanize the interaction with the main outer focus, and contextualizing transformations to incarnate the life of the main outer focus, for example.

Introverted extropian, mechatronic neurothealogizing, technogaian buddhist.
Likes integration, visualization, elucidation and transformation.

À Renaissance Man (or woman) is someone with multiple talents across several fields. A famous example would be Leonardo DaVinci who was skilled in art, several fields of science, engineering, history, poetry, and more!

It was coined relatively recently (in the last 100 years) as is inspired by polymaths like DaVinci and other great thinkers of the Renaissance.

The similarity with Jack of all Trades is that both describe people with multiple skills, but one is a compliment and one (pretty equally across cultures) is considered derogatory.

Personally I feel that a Jack of All Trades is very different from a Renaissance Man.

Trades could involve any type of skill, from laying brick to being a mathematician. Renaissance is generally more in reference to the arts. I, for example, paint, do graphic design, play guitar and drums, edit film, etc. These things came natural to me. I consider myself a Renaissance man in that sense. However, I also know a little about web development, electronics, building computers, etc. These I had to learn through instruction. That to me is more about knowing trades.

I don't see anything wrong with having many skills, but when it comes to making a living, I believe it's important to focus on one or two.
