As Jedi, we seek to know and understand, not to judge

The whole idea of not judging people is strange and seems to go against all that we have been taught through our lives. Often times you hear someone quote, “judge not least ye be judged yourself.” At first it sounds like wisdom and a level of righteousness that we might never be able to achieve. Yah, whatever!

“ 1 Judge not, that ye be not judged.” KJV
Wow, that is just profound. But wait, the very next verse expounds upon that. Matthew 7:2…
“For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be
measured to you again” KJV
So this is one of those eye-for-an-eye things that the Old Testament goes on about? Well, let’s read on and see what else is said. Matthew 7:3-5…
“3 And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?
4 Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye?
5 Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye.” KJV
WOAH!!! No way? :pinch: I could be wrong but it sounds like the entire passage is telling people not to cast such harsh judgments on people when your own house is not in order. Because if you do you will be passed under the same unfair treatment you bestowed on another. Hmm…
Often times, in the past, people have used the do not judge others quote as a way to get clear of some wrong doing they have done. Or it is used to pacify those that would not show tolerance to something different than themselves. But that is not what the passage refers to. It is telling others not to be hypocritical.
Passing judgment on things is a very natural part of life. This pie tastes better than that one. No worries! But condemning others who are just as human as we all are… not so cool.

No, I didn't mean LITERALLY don't judge anybody ever.
I meant it as a reminder that we have no right to judge the beliefs of another when they seem strange or "wrong" to us. Everyone is entitled to their own beliefs, and ought to be allowed to believe in them without the fear of discrimination or judgement. Yes, not passing judgement on someone's values or lifestyle is difficult, and often, must be learned, but that doesn't mean it's impossible.
However, I believe we can judge someone's actions, if it's appropriate to the situation. Such as, if that person is engaging in harmful (to themselves or others) behaviour.
i dont know how it came across to you but i want to make sure and express that im not trying to be nit picky or contentious
your comment brought to my mind a set of ideas that i think are really useful and important for people in general, and i wanted to point that out
peace

what do you believe in when youre looking at the ones YOU find distasteful?
for myself, i know that i am more judgmental than i should be, and its an issue i am working on
i dont even feel its right to apologize for it until ive gotten it under better control
but i dont preach "non judgment"
i preach "disciplined judgment"
and i dont have to agree with someone in order to like them, or agree with or even like them in order to respect them, or even to accept them as extended family
i dont have to be like and be friendly or agree with someone, or their views, in order to feel invested in their well being, or to be committed to our mutual development
so, while i may be more judgemental than some, in a way, im also quite a bit less judgemental
