I should clarify my original post in that I am mainly speaking about news stories of a political nature, or else stories that discuss a certain issue.

The most basic form of fact-checking I do takes five minutes at most, but I also realize that many people do not even have five minutes of time that they deem worthy for it. Also, I definitely do not do this for every story, merely those I feel are important to me.

Kohadre wrote: It is the news stations job to broadcast with integrity. It is not our job to research a news story that has already been presented to the general public.

That time can and should be spent doing far more important things.

I agree with this. It is sad that people have to fact-check, and that is the biggest problem with media bias on all sides in my opinion. It is not our job to research, but it seems necessary if we are to fully understand an issue. If a Jedi can potentially make any kind of difference with an ongoing issue or is to form an opinion on it, that fact-checking becomes necessary.

personally, i take the opposite view

if its not important enough to fact check then it falls into a category similar to these:

.. a deliberate attempt at psychological manipulation

.."whats going on" is only important in the sphere within which it is going on

..the VAAAAASTT majority of crap they shove in your face is CRAAP

if its in one of those categories then i dont WANT an opinion on it - i have better things to do than worry about startbucks christmas cups lol

i dont consider that i have a "right" to an opinion that i havent done some fact checking on - its not even fair to have an opinion IN MY OPINION, if a billion other people have already researched the topic and shared their results and all i have to do is use a couple search engines and read for a few minutes to get up to date

as far as it being their "job" to broadcast with integrity, i agree that it is SUPPOSED to be their job, and i wish that it really was, but its not

their job is to put on a show that people choose to watch when they have a thounsand other similar shows to choose from - thats their job

truth has been sold out, integrity has been sold out, we've been sold out

thats why i believe that we, as individuals, need to take responsibility for our own reasearch and for the nature of our own influence, opinions, and overall message - "they" or "the system" is broken and corrupt

now we have to be the system, which is why i like to say "we are the media too"

People are complicated.

Well thah is certainly true but I don't how the news does this.

mindless=???

MadHatter was referring to when I said that I use social media for mindless entertainment as opposed to as a news source. Although I feel like some news sources are pretty mindless.

What seems to be the best course of action, would be to avoid social media news sources. Go straight to multiple news websites and such where there are more facts and we are able to make informed decisions and opinions.

Social media news tends to highlight only the worst of the worst to attract people with blood and gore.

But as a Jedi should we use these platforms to make a stand against the use of torture and cruel or unusual punishment, including the death penalty as per the doctrine?
