I ran across an interesting BBC documentary on the Shaolin monks, and wanted to share it with the rest of the TOTJO community.

The Shaolin are dedicated towards the mastery of the self in all aspects, mental, physical, and spiritual. They focus their minds through demanding meditation in the forms of yoga, sparring, and conditioning.

So long and thanks for all the fish

I have always admired the shaolin monks, the fact that they still exist today almost un-changed by modern society is amazing.

Is stagnation something to be valued?

I am inspired by there work ethic, discipline, and movement patterns, but nothing beyond that.

Aesthetically pleasing to the eye.

the guy in the image i see before clicking the video is "tonay ja"

he is a thai actor who mixes muay boran/muay thai with acrobatics, far as i know he never uses wires in his movies, and he does some amazing stuff

a glimpse of his break out film, Ong Bak: Thai Warrior

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8MebtvHX1A8

and heres a really cool scene of him "vs" lateef crowder, who is a really phenomenal capoeira guy (tekken fans would ecognize him as the eddy gordo)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rEbm7D1L_tA

as to the OP, i do think shaolin is pretty cool, although my understanding is that they are not allowed (by the government) to be relevant in any meaningful way to broader society anymore - they can do performances at theatres and such but thats about it

i may be wrong about that though - its just a kind of impression ive gotten, more than a conclusion ive reached as a result of research

People are complicated.

They have always inspired me, I actually know some people who met them and told me stories of them from China, Ive been trying to work their wisdom and training style into my own workout and style.. one of these days I will get that opportunity to see the monastery and maybe even study.....
