Perhaps the problem is a lack of perspective or listening. The USA is such a big place with a lot of things. I don't think people feel the need to be aware of outside perspectives.
Whereas coming from a small country, Australia, we don't automatically think that everything Aussie is the solution.
I mean, we are fully aware of our British past, whereas in my opinions a lot of Americans think the USA spontaneously burst into creation at some time. Completely separate from the UK.
And this is relevant, because the current laws stem from the War of Independence experiences.
Americans online use definitive words, but it only refers to them. "Government can never do anything right", "What's happening to our nation" etc etc. Most of us foreigners go, what country is this person from? Why are they just assuming we are all Americans? (That never gets old).
I SPEAK AMERICAN! (Dude, it's English, because you were once a British colony).
So I've found it pointless speaking to a lot of Americans about gun control, because I feel a lot have no perspective of the world outside their large bubble.

I think if people actually paid attention to the amendment in question, and if it was actually appropriately enforced/implemented, then there'd be significantly less gun issues in the US. The way I look at it, if you support a free state, you are out of necessity part of its well trained militia, and therefore are one of the people whose right to bear arms shall not be infringed. If you're not part of a militia to protect a free state, you're not part of "the people" (maybe you are a spy for the English crown?
), and don't have a right to keep or bear arms.
I live in the UK and rather like the attitude toward firearms here, although I deplore the introduction of taser guns (which over here are not replacing firearms, but a new thing altogether). Why would a criminal use a gun when no-one else has got them? Having a gun to commit a same crime is only a guaranteed way to spend significantly more time in prison. And even if a criminal uses a gun whilst committing a crime, they only need to show it. Why bother even loading it. The bank, petrol station or whatever don't have guns. This means there are zero chances the criminal will get shot at, and the criminal in return does not need to use the threat of firearms, or actually discharging one in order to make their intentions clear.
Afraid someone will break into your home? get insurance. And ifsomeone does break in, have them walk out with your stuff as quickly as possible. The police will eventually catch them, and the insurance will pay out. No need to risk killing someone, getting killed or injured for a TV or a phone which in five years time will be worthless anyway, provided you actually considered these objects valuable to begin with. If you're still looking for retaliation after that, there are other more civilized ways of obtaining such satisfaction.
We get american cop shows on TV here, with the original american commentary. If we got cops like these here I would advocate revolution... But I don't think they're absolute assholes because they want to be, or because that's the kind of people police forces want to hire. I think they become such assholes out of need to survive. I mean WTF kind of country do you live in when you pull over someone for a broken tail light, and it ends with gunshot wounds and fatalities? Living with a constant risk of serious injury or death is not a "freedom" i wish I had, and certainly not one i wish for others either, cops or civilians. No wonder they're batshit insane.
The whole "you have the right to defend your home with deadly force if necessary" argument is absolute rubbish as well. Has a neighbor annoyed you? A black guy moved to your neighborhood? Have your wife's tits gone south, or your husband become fat and bald? Then why not mistaken them for an intruder and just shoot them! Only $299 at your nearest gun shop! If it's your right, then the police can't arrest you for it, right?
How many people have been killed because someone who actually possessed and used a firearm wrongly believed their victim was in possession of a weapon? And why on earth should the perpetrator get away with it?
