in america at least, the mass media is doing a terrible job of things
as a society it is necessary imo for us to realize the extent of our influence in the digital age
sales and consumer driven, entertainment media is pretty much a nod to industry and financial market powerhouses
as individuals we dont have the resources of the moguls but imo its important to consider our facebook and twitter and even totjo accounts as being just as much MEDIA OUTLETS as CNN or FAKES NEWS
EDIT
the cultural dialogue is as much ours to determine as any media empire, and we're better equiped than ever in human history to realize that fact
to OP
its never IMMORAL to mourn a tragedy
the problem is when people demand solutions to issues that they dont take the time to become fairly informed on

One thing I will say on this is that social media has allowed a huge sense of false accomplishment with the hashtag activism. All the people showing their support for France by having their profile pic temporarily changed to have a faded French flag is great and all, but it does absolutely nothing. People tend to forget that and start to believe that by clicking 'like' and using the right hashtag that they are making a difference when they really aren't.
As far as "well you should be supporting everyone" argument goes, support who you will. Support your friends and neighbors and in turn they shall support you and their other neighbors and then they support their neighbors and so on and so forth. Yes, the things happening all over the world are just as terrible as what happened in Paris. Yes, we all care about that too. You just can't expect us to freak out every time something happens anywhere in the world. As has been said, we can only do so much.
