Don Quixote was either happy in his delusions or he was unhappy in his reality.
Thing is, I think he was BOTH at the same time. He was at once a person here and a person there.
I have admiration for his pursuit of what made him happy. I have no admiration from his ignoring his current reality.

I think it was an analogy for mankind.
We persist in our own delusions, spin things so we understand them. We have our own windmills.

i always imagined that don quixote knew exactly what he was doing and that maybe even cervantes himself wasnt quite in on the joke
that quixote realized towards the end of his life that all his days had been mundane and pointless and from there set out to live as a real adventurer and express the noblility of spirit that he craved while he still had a chance
maybe he reached the mid life crisis age or just a psychological breaking point not in terms of sanity but of the idea that "sanity" had meaning - that he was on his way out anyway and so why not live a dream before he goes?
so what if he is laughed at?
what if he sees the dragon inside the windmill because it is his heart to battle dragons before he dies?
he survived his own dream, which is more than a lot of us can say
i was just curious of anyone else imagined it that way
