Building a lightsaber can be meditative and can be quite enjoyable...my most recent build was for my nephew and cost maybe $30 at most....I used the led from an old headlamp and some other parts from radio shack, the hilt was from pvc and stainless steel tubing...you can use basically any material you want and wire it up however you want..for his it has a powered on led, lighted switch and the blade led, no sound yet as the soundboards do cost a bit...
