I have been married three times in the traditional sense. I personally believe that marriage should be nothing more than the commitment of a person or people to another person or people for a mutual agreed upon benefit. Legal temporary marriage? Let's get the government out of marriage completely, and then any marriage could be successful.

Three marriages here too....

To me, "till death do us part" included the "death" of the marriage...

When the current Mrs. Jestor and I got married, the major issues I had discovered from the previous marriages were discussed....

We still have our own issues, but, after the "trial run" of 1 & 2, I think I'm doing better.... lol, opinions vary...

If number 3 was to leave me, I would do better for number 4...:)

While that might not seem, uh, like I'm committed to this marriage, I am... But once one person (my wife) is done, what is the point of trying to keep a broken thing together?

Many other thoughts cross my mind, but ill stop now, lol....

Very interesting topic. I was just discussing this very thing on friday with a co-worker that's in an arranged marriage (I work with a lot of Hindus). They aren't happy in their marriage but divorce is so foreign because "you just don't do that" they said.

It was well known in the community I grew up in that some couples would elope to Las Vegas, **** like rabbits for a few days, then get the marriage annulled. Then technically they were never sinning because they were having sex with a lawfully wedded spouse.

I'm not sure how I think of temporary marriages with a specific term, but I do agree with Matthew Erickson: I wish the government had nothing to do with it.

I may be the only one here, but I find the idea of short term marriage licenses quite depressing. What incentive is there to actually try, when you know in three, five, ten years you can just 'get out'. Marriages take work, and while some people may benefit from the above idea, I think many may end up in unfulfilling relationships because the end is always in sight.

It won't let me have a blank signature ...

To be fair, I find the idea of marriage licenses in general quite depressing... ;)

I think there are good reasons...

To make sure close relatives do not marry, for example...

I found out my second wife had a high number of abortion/miscarriages that way... She was something of a habitual liar... :pinch:....

I think there is a difference between divorce because a marriage isn't working and having a short term licence 'in case'. I find the idea of 3 year licenses ridiculous, because after 7 years I am still learning things about my fiance. How well can you really know someone in three years? Why even bother getting married?
