I'm all for giving without wanting something in return. Just giving or helping or doing things for others because I want to and not because I expect something from it.
But I don't agree in putting another's needs above my own. To me that means putting on someone else's oxygen mask before I put mine on. If you're not looking after your own needs, then how can you look after someone else's? If I am sick, then I'm going to rest so I get well. I'm not going to keep doing things for others and make myself more sick... if that makes sense.
