Perspective and...wrong? was created by rugadd
Okay, so I put a bucket in the attic to keep the water from leaking into the house. I was diligent keeping it emptied and no more water damage was taking place. I told associated parties that the leak was fixed and made plans to replace the roof inthe spring. Roommate found the bucket in the attic and now I'm a piece of $^!* and a liar. No property damage, plan in place to fix it, but because they see a bucket with water in it I am condemned. I see their position but I don't feel I did anything wrong save perhaps I could have chosen my wording better when I told them the leak was fixed.
Your thoughts? How do I handle the angry roommate?

Maybe just that? You could tell them that you're sorry you weren't more clear about it being taken care of? And just leave it at that. You can't stop someone from being upset if they want to be upset, so I imagine apologizing for your side of the "wrong" would be sufficient.

You could always ask them if their stuff was still getting wet ... Ask them again how much they contributed to the cost of replacing part of the roof ? Or, ask them if they wouldn't mind climbing out onto a roof to fix part of it during a blistering cold winter ... ? Or if they might not prefer to do 'springtime' jobs in springtime ?
Besides, if their problem was that there was a hole in the roof, then no, it wasn't solved. If their problem was that their stuff was getting wet (and/or water damage to the rest of the house) and that was solved ad hoc by the bucket, and they continue to bitch, well -- in that case, the biggest 'problem' isn't the leak ...

From my understanding there are those out there that will condemn you no matter what you would have done. Even if you had gotten on the roof and fixed the shingles yourself. My only question is why you were the only one responsible for the leaking roof??? Your roommates could have very well fixed it themselves. You did the right thing by taking the initiative and attempted to stop the problem as best you could at the time. Do not worry about your roommates giving you grief, just accept that you did the best you could and carry on from here. As far as dealing with angry roommates, just live your life. You can not change the way they think, but you can change the way you view this situation. Maybe you are living with people who aren't helping you grow, but maybe your actions can help them grow. Not everything is a symbiotic relationship even though we wish it were.
