Texan woman kept artificially alive due to pregnancy

Based on just this article alone, I can't really make up my mind about what I think. On one hand, I feel terrible for the family. The husband and child have lost their wife/mother. That's a terrible thing. On the other hand, I'm very much a "life begins at conception" type of person, and I think that everything should be done to allow a child that is conceived to be born and live its life. But who's to say that the child will even be able to be born, let alone live a normal life? If the mother went as long as their saying without oxygen, thus causing her to die in the first place, then who's to say that the child is fine. Twenty something odd years ago, this wouldn't have been an issue. The child would have been allowed to die with the mother.

I'm certain that there are plenty of facts about what's going on that aren't in this article. If the family has it in writing that the mother did not want to be kept artificially "alive", then the hospital needs to honor that wish and allow the family to bury her and move on with the grieving process. Ultimately, though, I can't see there as being a "right" thing to do. I just hope and pray that this family receives closure on the matter as soon as possible.

But in all seriousness, that's messed up

Personally I think it's amazing that due to the advances in medical technology we have now, this child may get a chance at life. As a parent who would gratefully lay down my life if it meant my child could live, and an organ donor, I don't have an ethical problem with keeping the mother's body going even if she's technically dead. She's not using her body any more.

Life with psychological issues or never being born... I know which I'd choose.

Beyond that I'm with Wescli on this - the oversimplified story we're hearing simply isn't the complete picture, and there's an obvious agenda behind this sort of interpretation.

As someone with psychological issues, I also know which I'd choose given the opportunity. Not living at all would be better than most of the things I have experienced due to these "issues".

Of course it's hard for someone without these issues to understand why it might be better not to have been born at all; assuming you don't have some of your own.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm about to have tea with my cat while wearing a 10/6 hat

Afraid to say I have a small army if such issues myself, and yes, at times I would have taken the other road (even tried to)... but things can and did get better. I hope they will for you some day :)

Personally I don't hold much value in hoping for the future, as things are always the best they can be.

Ah, there is always more to the story then what the media shows us...and the media has been biased since obama's first election...because they're all a bunch of conservative jock riding rich folk....

I used to think I had issues because of my past....then I took psychology in college, and learned that I was the only sane person on campus...apparently I was the only one that had faced and overcome my demons....or at least came to terms with things....

It seems very strange for texas. Usually death is surrounded with all sorts of religious stuff, you'd expect them, of all people, to respect that. You'd also expect to see laws about corpses override this as well. if she was heart/brain dead, you'd expect them not to be legally able to "play" with her remains.

Just bumping this thread

I saw on the televised news last night that the state of Texas has finally decided to let the woman die according to her wishes and the wishes of her family.

The baby also wasn't viable. They only caved because they're getting the heck sued out of them.
