The German Sheperd

You have to picture where I live. It is a circle of condos and in the middle is a community park. Very nicely done. In winter it looks like a Christmas community. In the last six months we are seeing alot of people moving in with big dogs. Nothing wrong with this but the owners are getting a little lazy in walking them so they let them run on the loose. I've always been a little concern about this but being an animal lover and in the spirit of community I let it slide. In truth, the whole community let it slide.

There is less and less places for animals to run on the loose. We have no dog parks in Ottawa.

Tonight I was walking my Coton on a leash and we were agressed by a German Shepard off its leash. It was in attack mode, jumped my dog and I got really scared and at the same time really pissed off. I felt the owner had no control over his dog so I stepped in and gave him a good kick in the butt to show him who was boss.

My wife feels I should pull the plug on the operation but it will ruin the fun for four other big dogs in the community which have always behaved properly.

Is this an impossible balance to maintain? Is this an accident waiting to happen?

War is necessary. We can elude to peaceful conduct as much as we want, but everything happens in cycles. Practical advice for your side? Ask the condo association(ruling body) to implement/enforce rules concerning unleashed dogs.

Otherwise, ask yourself what is more important...a dog's right to run free, or your own families right to live.

Agreed ruggad....

Laziness of the big dog owners doesn't negate their duties...

And, it is their responsibility to ensure their dogs are taken care of, with exercise, food, shelter, and their rules and limitations ...

Those big dog owners will be very sad if their dog gets sick, and needs pit down, or they get sued for the attack of a child...

Just because the "well behaved" dogs are "well behaved" around you, doesn't mean they are around others, or that some neighbors aren't still afraid and stay indoors...

On walk-about...

Sith ain't Evil...
Jedi ain't Saints....

I do believe mace works on dogs too...

I'm trying to understand, for the life of me, why anyone would just let their dogs run wild like that. Really it's negligence. Not only is it dangerous for their dog, but for other people and their pets as well.

Thanks for weighing in everyone the message is loud and clear. It's time for action.

Hopefully I won't need the mace Whitehorse but I'll sharpen my sword just in case.

Maybe you ought to consider getting other dog owners to pitch in to build a dog park area within the community park to give people a place to let their dogs run. But even still they should be there to supervise their dogs. Not just drop them off there for the day.
