I'd have to side with the doctors on this point. I've never seen the point in prolonging suffering just for the sake of being alive, especially if being alive means you can't move, speak, or breathe on your own.

Living, and a 'life', is more than simply being alive...

I've made a point to my wife that, if I were on my death bed, she shouldn't try to keep me going; just let me die as I would. I'd hate for her to have to deal with more debt because of medical bills that could have been avoided just for the sake of my life being prolonged, as I wouldn't be doing anything but laying there in anticipation of my own death. At that point, I would want her and my kids to say their last goodbyes and leave me to it. They could stay and watch, if they'd like, but I don't want to be on life support.

I'm not a proponent of suicide (excluding certain circumstances) however each person should be able choose their way of leaving for the next great adventure....dignity and pride come into play at that point...being in a perpetual vegetative state is alive, but it is NOT living....

i have a medical power of attorney/living will thing, filed with my attorney and listing my girlfriend as primary and sister as secondary, wherein they are invited and required to pull the plug if i am in a persistent vegetative state or otherwise fully disabled. i suggest everyone who does not want to think that they may end up in that situation make one as well. i would be glad to point you in the right direction upon request.
