My attempts at Lucid Dreaming so far have failed miserably. I usually wake up feeling as though I just closed my eyes moments ago. I can not even remember the dream in the morning, much less take control of the dream during the experience. At one point during my attempts I felt as though I temporarily experienced Astral Projection though. Not quite what I was after but a new experience all the same.

An inducement/mnemonic method that worked really well for me in the beginning was to write the letter "C" (meaning "Consciousness") somewhere on my hand, and a few times throughout the day look down at my hand and ask the question, "Am I dreaming?"
After a couple days to weeks of doing this, at some point in yours dreams you will look down at your hand and ask that question. Then, in the dream, you will awaken to the realization that you're dreaming and become lucid.
You may have already run across this technique, but I thought I'd offer it up in case you hadn't. It's pretty easy and has been successful for me and many of my friends.
