It's an interesting analogy: the dark side of life. Some things in life bring out our deepest emotions of anger, fear, hate, etc. It sounds like you set yourself up to experience fear if certain events transpire(no paycheck, can't pay rent, family becomes homeless). I had something similar happen to me. At some point I realized that to truly be free from the fear of losing things, I had to lose everything. After I lost everything my whole world changed. It's true freedom.
I knew this guy who lived next to me in a very high crime area, but he would leave his doors unlocked, even open. No security whatsoever. I asked him about it and he said that he just sets his state of mind so that he doesn't attract crime and nobody thinks about robbing him. He had a home theater, computers galore, money laying around, gold, you name it. Never robbed, not once.
Then there was myself... Meticulously locked everything and got bikes stolen, vehicles stolen, break-ins, etc.
