It seems to be a recurring pattern, from the first movie all the way to the latests novels and comics that...

"Sith represent a more Tribal society, with cults centered around individual people, personal relationships over institutions, survival over altruism. Sith aren't pure chaos, despite the stereotypes, they aren't evil/darkness incarnate (in most cases). They may mostly be evil, or at least believe in moral relativism and realism, but they are still People like anyone else. They just have more tribal values, tribal organization, and tribal society. They are more "id," the easier and more basic/natural way of living, emotional.

Jedi represent the next stage, a more Civilized society, holding loyalty to ideals over loyalty to people, institutions over personal relationships, altruism over survival. They have not all been guardians of Light, they aren't goodness incarnate, they are not Shiny Happy People Holding Hands in the Age of Aquarius or anything. They may mostly be good, or at least have some universal moral standards and abstract idealism, but they are still People like anyone else. They just have more civilized values, civilized organization, and civilized society. They are more "superego," the more difficult and advanced/artificial way of living, rational.

There seems to be a lot of evidence for this from the movies and the books, and it also seems somehow connected to the other nature/machine tension in Star Wars as well.

The true Sith/Jedi tension is not dark/light or good/evil (since they all depend on your point of view, anyways), it is really the tension between Tribalism and Civilization.

Agree? Disagree? Thoughts/Comments?"

Truly, a wonderous post....

How about the tension of evolution?

No one likes change... When we evolve further along, the followers of the old ways, often fight against the change....

In this scenario, the Sith would be our elders, trying to stop the youth from messing up and trying to change things... They would want to 'stay the course' and keep to what is known, and safe...

On walk-about...

Sith ain't Evil...
Jedi ain't Saints....

I personally think that the conflict between Sith and Jedi (at least in the Star Wars movies) represents Domination versus Balance, respectively.

The Sith represent domination because they are constantly power-hungry, constantly plotting to overthrow leaders, constantly plotting to put their enemies down through revenge, dominating their allies and putting them in their place (Sidious and the Separatist Leaders), Obsessed with Strength - even at the expense of health (deformation due to harnessing the dark side), etc.

The Jedi represent balance because they are peacekeepers (calming down uprisings and lifting up oppressed people), separate and therefore distanced from politics (the old Jedi Order, that is), purging their minds of extreme thoughts such as revenge, attachment, envy, lust, anger, etc., and refusing to use the force in extreme ways (such as refusing to use force lightning due to its extreme association with the dark side).

What are your thoughts on this?

I'd like to think that thats the face value of what star wars wants people to think. How ever the truth is that....

The Sith and Jedi aren't very different at all. Its not a duality of twoness but a duality of oneness.

The Sith and the Jedi both wont world peace but they just go about obtaining that peace differently.

Jedi seek peace through patience, compassion, and discipline.

The Sith seek peace through control, passion, and obedience.

The balance the balance that is spoken of is that if the Jedi have too much power you'll lose the concept of what "good" really is because there will be no evil to contrast it to.

If the Sith have to much power you'll all knowledge of what "good" is because evil will become the common perspective or the only perspective.

You cant have one without the other and a complete domination by one or the other will cause us to lose sight of who we are.

If you take a look around you'll find that "evil" greatly out balances "good". This world has become so disharmonic that its true what they say....

"Regardless of what you believe, we sure could use the Jedi now more than ever."
