My grandfather is 82. Worked since he was 12 years old, but had to give up around ten years ago now. For the last ten years he's been fighting bowel cancer, and for the last five he's been struggling with it. Slowly but surely my grandparents had to move off their property in the country, into the suburbs, into a small (comparatively) house, with a small yard, to be able to be nearer emergency services and contacts. I discovered a few months ago the cause of his most recent trip to hospital was not due to the cancer, but due to a very well planned suicide attempt. He was found illegally parked about three hours from home with an empty bottle of sleeping pills. He was found by park rangers and taken to hospital and revived. Apparently his only expression for days afterward was one of disappointment. This illness has robbed him of his livelihood, his passion in life, and his dignity.
Since then I've taken my son to see him whenever I'm back from work, because I would very much like my son to be able to get to know his great grandfather a little more before he passes on, and I know it cheers them both up. While I wouldn't wish to deprive my grandmother of her husband, I don't blame my grandad for what he tried to do, and have made my peace with it, because I know it might very well happen again.

One question for consideration: are there circumstances when it's acceptable and ones where it isn't?
By this I mean do that person's motives play a role in if ending their own life should be allowable?

Good point...
I think, if ones death is (seemingly) going to be premature, from a situation that is unexpected, and the quality of life is going to be less than desirable, I see this as an alternative...
Quality of life is the determining factor, and that is subjective....
Where I think being a quadriplegic is unacceptable because I cannot feed myself, and wipe my own butt, Steven Hawking seems to have no issue with it...
It needs to be done with a cool head, and sound mind.... lol, or as sound as possible... :woohoo:

This subject is such a grey area, and I don't feel like I'm fully able to come to a conclusion as to what to think.. It's been debated here in the UK recently-ish... While some people who might currently be in the position to choose it were for it, others were saying they should learn to find the desire to live.
My general feeling is that people should have a choice, but I'm not sure, if I were in such a position, that I would take it.

I don't have an answer that is any more insightful than what many have already shared. That said, I can't help but find it ironic that we fear death so much that modern medicine makes every possible attempt at preventing it. And now we see people asking for permission to use modern medicine to end their life peacefully and painlessly.
At what point do we consider the amount of tinkering we are doing with nature? That's a legitimate question. As a Jedi, I place my faith in the Force to guide me, but what if ending my life is counter to this?
Questions...
