im posting this because the old guy knows some stuff and because i jabbed myself in the eye with my own thumb once ONCE lol doing and upward elbow - thats not exactly what he talks about here but my experience is that what he says about thumbs sticking out is generally correct

plus i like to see old guys kicking ass

i dont like the knife defense at about 5:26 because it depends on the one handed grab being enough to secure the arm
the "two on one" rule of using two hands to secure one of their hands is a good rule, especially against a knife

otherwise i think his perspective offers insight

bareknuckle punching

its a little odd the way he does his videos. i wanted to post this more to open the topic up in peoples minds

in other vids he advocates using three knuckles in punching and i totally disagree with that but this vid has things worth thinking about

imo open hand strikes are really important to train as the default method for S.D. as much as possible

this is a really good introduction to what grip fighting is and why it is important.

sometimes people have an assumption that using the GI to achieve a technique is not applicable in a S.D. situation. there is a real difference between the high quality gi of a judoka or jiu jitsu player and a generic t-shirt you'll find in wal mart, but the fundamentals of GI based techniques are absolutely effective against normal clothing. sometimes the clothes will tear, and potentially a situation may involve someone who isnt wearing a shirt, or the shirt doesnt have sleeves, but none of this is a good reason to neglect gi based techniques because they do work in S.D. really well if you train them. especially in winter time when everyone is wearing long sleeves
