a favorite of mine (probably because i came up with it)
fear, when left unchecked, prevents good people from doing great things.
it seems to me that most writers,as well as other artistic types, tend to also be philosophers. i think it has something to do with their sense of aesthetics. often an altered or elevated perception causes one to think deeply on the big questions of life and come up with new perspectives.

another one i came up with in psychology class years ago:
perception is deception
since all our external senses can be fooled if we can perceive something we can be deceived by the very same thing. not to mention that we all perceive things differently
