TOTJO - A little Forum Guide

To make things easier for everyone we have decided to write a little guide on how to use TOTJO's forums & the Shoutbox.

Posting in the shoutbox
We have noticed some people post links like this http://www.luuux.com/food/mc-tasty in the shoutbox.

Normally this would be fine but unfortunately the hyphen breaks the link. Now a way to get around this is to use http://www.tinyurl.com or https://bitly.com/shorten/ it will shorten your link thus no hyphens. So for instance http://www.luuux.com/food/mc-tasty would become http://tinyurl.com/bekhkzn :)

Posting on forums

We have also noticed some people double posting, this isn't an issue...more of a waste of space...after you have posted your post you are allowed Up to one hour to edit it, this timer refreshes every time you edit and click "Save" it makes things a lot neater if you edit your prior post...the edit button is pink and on the bottom right of your post. So it's easy to find.

Tags or "BB Codes"
If you, like me sometimes use "Quick Reply" but want to include the usage of bb codes to format your text better here is a little guide on the codes and what they do.

To quote words
Code:
[quote]enter desired text [/quote]

To make something Bold
Code:
[b]Your text here[/b]

To make something Italic
Code:
[i]Your text here[/i]

To make something Underlined
Code:
[u]Your text here[/u]

[strike]To make something Strikeout[/strike]
Code:
[strike]Your text here[/strike]

Warning: Spoiler!
Code:
[spoiler]Your text here[/spoiler]

Image Tags
When posting an image you can display it by doing the following format.
Code:
[img]Image Link here[/img]
Example
Code:
[img]http://www.templeofthejediorder.org/components/com_kunena/template/Formality_16/images/ranks/apprentice.jpg[/img]
would become

To make something A Code
Code:
[code]Your text here[ /code] < Minus the space.

Summation

we hope this helps some of the newer members to using a forum/TOTJO :-)

You might think that's the case...it's just because the "BB Codes" bit is much bigger...the first two parts was the main focus.

I think the OP might have been for a previous incarnation of the forum, as I do not see any 'Quick Reply' button anymore. For youtube vidz I just copy and paste the URL address into the body of your reply, quite literally like this for example;

Thanks mate!

I suppose they have switched to a newer template. Even though it doesn't have the quick reply feature(which is really handy imo) it is still pretty cool.

Is there any custom BBcode set up for floating an image? It's a good way to wrap text to the side of a signature image and make it take up less space overall.

I don't have the answer to this, but have you seen the size of some signatures? :P (Not looking at anyone in particular... ;) )

Tables are what are typically used in signature bbcode to place objects to either side.

Oh ok, thanks. I didn't realize this was possible with bbcode. :blush:

I'm having trouble showing that multiple quotes come from member A, as I address each quote, followed by the same thing for member B. In particular the quote="memberA" post=number code. This goes first and that first quote needs to be wrapped in quote-/quote code. So the 2nd quote also needs its own quote-/quote and so on, right?

When quoting member B, I start the quote="memberB" post=number code, followed by quote-/quote references. But I get something wrong as the result

Yes. when something starts with quote= it has to end with /quote

So if you have (quote="Member A" post=144965) you have to end it with (/quote). that is when you can start typing. then if you want to add in another quote, from another member, you just put (quote="Member B" post=3564) and end that with (/quote) as well.

I'm not sure if that helps you at all

Its more basic...

Just need:

Code:
[quote="jestor"] this is quote [/quote]

that makes:

jestor wrote: this is quote

That easier?

I seen you like to do this for more clarity. To do this, you just have to close out the quote by adding
Code:
[/quote]
to the end of the quote.

Entropist wrote: When quoting member B, I start the quote="memberB" post=number code, followed by quote-/quote references. But I get something wrong as the result

Then you have to start it up again by adding
Code:
[quote]
for the next section of the quote, so before you started to say "When quoting member B..." and then have
Code:
[/quote]
at the end of the quote again. You type what you want after that. It makes the flow so much easier.

Also, if you want to have "Member B wrote:" you just put
Code:
[quote=Member B]
or copy and paste their opening quote code.

Sorry for the double post. I meant to put this one instead of my last rushed answer. You can delete the previous one if it helps. I think this one is a better answer, even though Jestor's was simple to understand.

And, if you could read all my posts, you'd see I get stupid...

So, offended, jestor wrote: Yea? So is your haircut!

I'm rather serious lately, but, I get silly!

Edit; I'm a bit slow, see above :)

They 'nest' like; here is three levels of nesting;
Code:
[quote]A; [quote]B; inside A[quote]C; inside B, which is inside A[/quote][/quote] [/quote]

Which would look like;

A;

B; inside A

C; inside B, which is inside A

But the idea is that the new post is not within quote brackets, so a common one is to just have two levels. Anymore then 2 levels gets a bit over the top in regards to the amount of space used... usually 2 levels is enough to make conversation easy to follow.
Code:
[quote][quote]Original Poster[/quote]Reply Poster[/quote] Original Poster Reply

Which if I got it right, would look like;

Original Poster

Reply Poster
