Seeking the knowledge of those more skilled I am looking for a way to take scanned documents or written work and input it into a word document. Does anyone know the required software to use ... I am running Windows 7 , MS Office 2003 , and have a scanner.

I think Br. Jasper or Br. RyuJin made a comment to IAMSONNY in his journal.... Look at Sonny's first few posts.....

Unfortunately, most text scanning software relies on typed text because handwriting is so unpredictable. I use AbbySprint and it always has a problem with handwritten text.

adobe acrobat 9 pro and a scanner....
open adobe
file/new
from/scanner
select 600 dpi, and B&W if no pictures on it.
let it scan
when finished, go to document menu and select OCR
and let it run, That is what make the image (from scanner) becomes an editable text, if you do the scan and the document its clean ( no shadows, no dirt) there is no problem
if are really old documents, maybe with imperfections, dirt and scratches, you can perform a clean up with adobe also, and THEN, run the OCR
if you don't like to pay fro adobe acrobat PRO, and you don't like to use a pirate copy ( cracked) version of it.
what you need to look is for OCR recognition software.
there are some free ( not good as adobe)
one time you have the ocr done, you can copy and paste the text from adobe to word,
if you try to export from adobe to office, it doesn't keep the ocr, just export an image of the text.
so don't so that...
My big question is, why transfer from one to the other, you can edit in full a pdf document with the right software, without, import, export, copy paste, and all the waist of time.
any question, let me know, I have some experience with that, actually I run a document server in my workplace, and they scan everything, and store it in the server, then they can look up for anything...( even inside documents and OCR was a problem years ago, not now, even carbon copies, can be recognized, and like I say, fails, when is old, dirt, or scratched...

got adobe 9 Pro for free (perk of being in school) and it appears that it does not like my hand writing. previously I could not edit PDF files due to only having a reader but, if I can scan the typed work in and just enter the hand written work in the PDF now that I have adobe may leave it there especially now that I see most publishers that are economical want PDF docs. Thanks for the help. If you catch me online would like to chat.

there are some other tricks to use it.
like, sometimes, the scaned doc, is to light, but if you use dark from scanner, comes to dirty, so its better to scan it in the best definition you can ( 600 dpi minimum) and then dump it in photoshop, play with the dark, contrast, and more, to make the font, darker
then you can try again in adobe or any other
